I recently had a friend start at the Man Group. I've never heard of it before, but it seems to be a pretty large fund of funds, with presence in Europe and the US. I was just curious if the firm carries a good reputation/whether its respectable? Any particular groups that are more sought after than others?

Man is not a fund of fund. Difficult to make a general statement because so big and home of diverse strategies/funds. The roots - AHL - was printing money for many years but i am not close to it so cannot speak on it. GLG had a very good reputation in the HF world (and might still have, dunno). Silvermine i cannot comment on.
Man Group has a few key groups (Man AHL, Numeric, GLG, GPM, FRM) doing various things.
