Master of Real Estate Development

What's good, fellow WSO Real Estate people?

I made a thread in the business school section about the MSRE/MRED/MSRED application but it didn't get many hits among the million MBA threads. Is anyone else applying for or waiting for a response from a Master of Real Estate program for this upcoming fall?

I've applied to MSREDs at NYU and Columbia. I'm waiting to hear from Columbia but have been accepted at NYU. Notification for Columbia seems to happen sometime around the second week of March based on information in other forums I've come across. I briefly looke at the programs at Georgetown and Johns Hopkins but decided to go with just the two applications.

Congrats on NYU. I've heard back from Johns Hopkins and Clemson so far - both yesses for me.

Congrats indeed. Do you have a preference? Are you waiting to hear from others?

I'm waiting to hear from others but these are my top two so I'm content. Pretty much weighing the pros and cons at this point. I like the program at Clemson better but Hopkins is a better name with a larger alumni network. Clemson is 2 years, JH is 1. I got a scholarship at JH...still more expensive in one year than Clemson would be in two...and that's before I even hear back from them about money hah.

When weighing program cost, are you accounting for the 1 additional year in lost salary at Clemson?

Yeah, although at Clemson almost every student has an internship during the summer and the second year, so it's less black and white

Where do you want to live/work after the msred? I'd think that is a pretty significant factor. JHU is going to carry much more weight in a place like DC given its alumni network. If you want to be in Atlanta, Raleigh/Durham or Charlotte then clemson would probably have a better network.

I'm pretty content with the southeast. Not originally from here but I love it. Clemson seems to place well in Charlotte, Charleston, Atlanta, Nashville, etc. so it's a definite plus.

Does the live/work locale consideration diminish in importance the further one gets from completing the MSRED? I certainly see how for immediate post-grad opportunities, many will be in the school's region. Do you think movement across regions and across the country becomes more realistic with experience and a larger network or will the school you attend (and it's largely localized alumni network) tend to limit future mobility?
