Menlo Park Buyside, Housing & Roommates
For people working at some of the shops in Menlo Park (KKR, SL, Carlyle etc. or the VCs), do you live in SF or around the Bay Area closer to the office? Given the hours, does it make sense to commute every morning / late at night?
How does one find roommates for places closer to the office (Redwood City, Palo Alto, Menlo etc.)? Anyone looking for roommates in late June/early July 2020?
Hi techthesis, check out these links:
I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.
Following. Not starting this year, however, so I am of no help.
Most people I know at the associate+ level (who don't have kids or a family yet) live in SF and commute. Analysts are a mixed bag but they tend to live closer to the office given the hours.
Are associate and analyst hours that materially different at those places?
It's not a huge difference but even 5-10 hours a week makes up for the increase in commute. Plus associates typically have more flexibility with working from home in the evenings etc.
The SF --> Menlo/Palo Alto commute is a pretty tough one. You're basically going to either have to Caltrain from 4th and King or 22nd St, which means you need to live within walking distance of those places, so Soma/Dogpatch/Potrero Hill, or you live somewhere else in the city and need to have a car. Even if you do take the train, almost none of the offices are near the station, so then you'd have to Uber/Bike to the office from there.
SF is way more fun if you're younger. Palo Alto/Menlo/Mountain View are ok, but it's generally quieter and there's less to do. If I were an analyst, I'd probably live as close to the office as possible, get a car if I need it, and kind of figure that I'm going to be working most of the time anyways. Once you get to Associate level and above, you can decide how you want to live.
It also kind of depends PE vs VC and your travel schedule. In VC the hours will be much lighter and people tend to be more flexible, meaning doing the drive before/after rush hour might be more acceptable. If I were at a Megafund and knew I was going to be grinding, I'd probably still try to live somewhere on the Peninsula.
There's a lot of Facebook groups for Bay Area housing that are active, I can't think of the names off the top of my head, but if you do a search I'm sure you'll find them. Back when I was in SF Craigslist also worked pretty well, for the most part its all young people in similar situations as you're in, so a lower likelihood you get someone weird.
