Hey guys,
I've been working at a valuations firm and was wondering what my exit opportunities down the road would be. Some of the work I've been doing are:
- Business Enterprise Valuations
- Purchase Price Allocations
- Goodwill Impairment Testing
- Derivatives (options - PWERM, Black Scholes)
- Fairness Opinion & Solvency
- A little bankruptcy and restructuring work
I moved from a back office position at a BB to this valuations firm.
I know moving to a top notch PE firm or IBD is out of the question, but I was hoping a boutique PE IBD HF, management consulting firms, or strategy type positions would take a look at me.
Anyways, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What Can You Do with Valuations Experience?
For those who work in valuations, there may not be a clear path into banking, private equity or management consulting, but it is possible. As with any job transition, it’s all about networking. Specific to valuations, the WSO community offers the following tips:
- Depending on the firm’s expectations for you in terms of how long you will stay there, they might have some connections and be able to help you out with exit opps etc.
- Reach out to headhunters and discuss your opportunities
- I've heard of moving from vals to corp fin, equity research (don't know of anyone personally that's done this), PE (not necessarily front office), and investment banking
- Network with people who have worked in valuations or who work in the field you want to enter

Exit Opportunities for Boutique Valuation Firm? (Originally Posted: 12/08/2012)
I received an offer from a boutique valuation firm called Anvil Advisors that specializes in valuations for technology start-ups and hedge funds. While I would likely learn a lot about valuation, I'm concerned about the exit opportunities, especially considering that since firm is so small, I would not have much chance for networking. Thoughts?
Just checked out their site, and it looks like at the senior level some pretty smart/accomplished guys. Depending on their expectations for you in terms of how long you will stay there, they might have some connections and be able to help you out with exit opps etc. Can't offer much else in terms of advice, unfortunately.
Agree with the poster above - the team looks legit and sounds like you could get some good experience, or at least be able to surround yourself with some serious professionals who could teach you a good bit about finance.

I'm not sure, valuations is really a bunch of crunching numbers. I'm thinking something that is more interactive with clients, I'm kind of leaning towards a consulting/strategy type role. But PE does sound interesting to me as well.
Middle Office - Valuation ops (Originally Posted: 05/18/2014)
Hey guys,
What would the exit ops be like from a bulge bracket, middle office group that supports a trading desk by running valuations on a the traders product (e.g. - MBS's, muni's, etc.)? I know its middle office, but since you are directly involved in the asset acquisition process wouldn't this have some exit op's to hedge funds, etc?
Obviously the role has normal middle office components too - making sure models/data are right, reportng, etc. but I found the valuation part interesting and thought it may be able to be spun pretty well. Appreciate any guidance, thanks!

Primarily investment banking. I wouldn't say lots of people, but plenty of people make the move into IB from vals. I don't know of one single person that has done consulting unfortunately, maybe someone else can chime in on this.

Know a guy who went to VC from vals so it's not impossible. Plenty of people from vals --> IBD though...
