MSF/MA Econ help

Hey guys,

I'm struggling trying to find an appropriate program for me.

Let me start with I want to do. I want to work either in MBB or IB, potentially S&T dependent on program.

I love the idea of doing something theoretical like Economics and have looked at following programs:

Brandeis MAIEF
Claremont MAPEB
NYU
Toronto

Whilst I'm also looking to apply at MSF programs. My list:

Villanova
Vanderbilt
BC
WUSTL
Duke
Florida

My background: GRE 1450 (Q780), 3.5 GPA, International Relations major, no real work experience.

What I would like to know is where I would best be able to achieve my career goal? I want to do Economics but can someone shed some light on potential of me moving onto the careers I mentioned or is it really a beginning towards a PHD?

Alternatively, I have read tons about all the unis besides Florida. How is Florida regarded? Is it a party school or are placements good? Anyone applying there, etc...?

Thanks

The problem is you said you want to do consulting, banking, sales or trading. That's pretty wide open dude. Narrow your focus and you might get better feedback

Until others more knowing than myself come by; I can tell you that without prior finance experience you will enter at the analyst level from every school/degree you listed. That said, I understand that economics is good for consulting so if you really want that route go for it but take some accounting courses just in case you want to switch to banking. If you are sure banking is right for you go with MSF. As far as S&T goes without past trading experience I am sure a prop shop or arm of some IB will give you a shot from either degree.

As an aside, if you haven't been on this board very long, great piece of info from Anthony is that all MSF are very regional so take that into account heavily.

So you basically want to do anything and want advice on those schools.

MSF, outside of Princeton and MIT, will place regionally and into the analyst level unless you have experience. MBB tend to be brand whores so the names on your list won't help you in that dept. An mSF will get you mid level consulting (think Deloitte or boutique shops). Nova has a handful of consulting placements.

Most people go into banking or f500 finance roles. It is a masters in FINANCE so you get pigeon holed real easy. Tulane tends to place more into S&T.

I think you should either work or intern for a little bit. You need to get a clear picture of what you want to do and what your goals are.

I think I mentioned the roles because I am open to what I want to do. Ideally it would be MBB. I think it translates best into my undergrad.

When you mention that MBB are brand whores, isnt Duke a brand name?

Also, what kind of programs would you recommend then?

I am actually interning at a consulting firm right now so have work experience.
