Networked my ass off, what now?

Hello WSO,

I'm a summer intern in a finance division of a BB bank. I enjoyed the internship but I realised finance is not a career for me. During my internship I worked very closely with the wealth management and investment side of the bank and built some good relationships with those guys. The bank doesn't have a official AM wing but portfolio management and internal Investment product is contained within wealth management. I chatted to the head of funds and he liked me and told me to keep in touch if I want to move, I also spoke to the VP in the same team who said that he can drop an email to who ever I want to help me move. By the sounds of it their work is the AM side of the bank without being outright called that which is the area I would like to be in.

I have not mentioned to HR that I want to move yet because I want to secure the offer first and then push for it but my question is how do I utilise these connections to help me?

Thanks guys

Stay in touch with the two folks you mentioned. Be honest with them. Let them know your real interest, excitement, etc. Interesting and good to hear you say you enjoyed the internship just not the subject matter. That's important. You like the bank, the people, the culture. You just didn't like the field (make sure it's that and not just the specific things you did because any entry level position will be full of grunt work. You have to go through that to get to the good stuff.)

Really nothing to lose here. You don't want to work in the area of your internship. Now you need to see what else can be done and will they accommodate you? Sounds like you have two allies that can get you face time with the right folks. That's huge!

If you're serious about all this, I would get the offer and then get back with them and ask for their help. Let them know you really enjoyed your internship, the company, the culture, are very grateful (especially during covid)...but you're just now wowed by corp finance (or whatever) Tell them what you are interested in and ask them if they would connect you with the right folks to make that happen.

Thank you for the comment, it definitely was not the work it was more the prospects of the job in the future and just couldn't see myself in that career for a long time. The bank was great and I can't wait to get the offer (fingers crossed), request to move and get back in touch with the Director and VP and hopefully they'll increase my chances of getting transferred. I think I'll still have to do a assesment centre but it's still a very good opportunity.

Again thanks for the advice, really appreciate ot
