Networking from the midwest, gunning for internship this summer, extremely late
Ok to give you some sense of where I am, I am about 10 hours from NYC and 6 hours from Chicago (and according to greyhound, 13hrs and 8 hours by bus, respectively). So not like I can swing by some random afternoon, getting to either city is going to take some planning (I'm a soph and don't have a car, otherwise driving to Chicago wouldn't be that big of a deal).
I'm a sophomore at a non-target, 3.65 gpa, working two internships (one is F500 in a kind of corporate finance role), involved in school, yaddy, yadda.
Pays pretty well considering I don't do all that much but I would like to leapfrog to something better. Applied to a bunch of different places through my school's career management and different websites.
Thought about applying to boutiques and I have a spreadsheet that lists a bunch of boutiques in different cities that I am going to start calling tomorrow.
But it got me to thinking, what if one bank, say in NYC does take interest to me, they are gonna wanna see me in person, makes sense. My school and work schedule is a total bitch where weekends would obviously work better but not sure how they would be done with that. Chicago would be more realistic, but still a pain. I doubt they would hire me over skype haha.
I realize it is late in the process and I am only a sophomore with no modeling experience and limitations on travelling to network....so sucks to suck I guess haha, but I'm still going to go hard this week calling places.
Local places (30-60 minutes away) I could easily travel to this week.
Thanks!
... so what is your question?
I don't know what you're asking but I loved your TV show
Yeah sorry. A lot of times when I write on here I write a wall of text, so I try to condense it and it looks like I condensed too much!
Most firms are gonna want to meet with me face to face, no? Given how (this year with no car) I have certain constraints would I be better off just networking locally?
But I don't want to give up, Walmart does all of its hiring process online/Skype type thing but I'm not sure. Should have picked a non-target closer to the city haha.
Also any advice?
Edit: Doostang. Worth paying for one month of premium?
Thanks
I think when you land an interview you should tell them that you're too busy to fit them in your schedule.
They would likely want to do it during the week, right? They will likely be working some of Saturday, could I interview then?
I'm sure when people are working on Saturdays they are absolutely thrilled to be there and will have no problem accommodating your specific interview date request.
Yeah I get it haha.
I just have no idea what to expect given the informal nature that some boutiques have with respects to internships and whatnot. Older friend had an interview with a BB and I think it was on a Friday and they paid for his flight and I think put him up somewhere nice. Obviously not expecting that, all from my own pocket, but have little clue on how the interview process is for some of these firms.
thanks
Called about 15 places today, no real luck. Only place that seemed remotely interested, has so-so reviews on here when you search them and some say it is a scam (apparently in the past they made you pay for internships. I did not get into this over the phone). So yay! A couple people gave me emails to send resumes to, not expecting much from that. Left a bunch of voicemails and I am honestly not expecting a callback from any of them haha, so if I get one, great.
Just going to keep plugging along.
My pitch has been: "Hi, my name is xxx, I am an honors student at XXX U. I am interested in investment banking and I was wondering if you had any opportunities for internships in the summer".
Quick and to the point. I'm not really networking or trying to build relationships at this point.
Gonna keep trying, got a big list of places to call!
Thanks
Why don't you network locally? You are in Ohio, so might as well try and focus on KeyBanc and other shops with an OH presence.
Doing a little bit of both.
Key is probably too late for this summer (they have formal recruiting at my school) and pretty much only look at juniors.
But I am looking at some other smaller firms in downtown Cleveland and around NE Ohio. I'm pretty much open to anything.
Thanks for the reply.
Got it, offhand I can't think of that many for IB groups, but there are a few boutiques in CLV area. Maybe you'd have some luck with smaller PE shops. I'll shoot you a PM with some names.
The biggest issue isn't that you wouldn't be able to coordinate a position from afar, it's that you're too late for most places that are looking to hire talent for this summer. In the event that you do land an interview, though, any reputable firm will pay to fly you up and put you up in a hotel. Obviously, no one is going to interview on the weekend.
