Networking with ghost banker you were referred to
Had been talking to a senior banker for around a year. He looped in his analyst to chat with me. I've emailed the analyst twice now, but he's ignored me. Viewed my LinkedIn, so I know he saw, but he didn't respond.
Look, I don't blame anybody from not responding, but I'll be interning here this summer, and the senior is asking me how it went with the analyst, so I don't know how to proceed. Would appreciate any advice. I'll follow up again with the analyst, but in the event he still doesn't respond, how do I proceed with the senior?
Just say you haven’t had a chance to connect yet. Do not ever throw the analyst under the bus because he will likely determine wether you a get a return.
Yeah for sure. I was thinking of saying something pretty much exactly likely that. He's in my top choice group too. It's a small group too, so I'll probably have to interact with him this summer. How do I go about that? Again, yeah it sucks he ignored, but thats life; how do I go about interacting with him this summer? Do I just say something like, "hey great to finally chat" or something?
Don’t acknowledge it, the guy is busy and doesn’t have time for you, you’re irrelevant to him, don’t give him a reason to dislike you by being annoying.
So it's cool to just pretend like he never knew me? I feel like he'd at least recognize the name, but aight man you're right. I'll just act like nothing happened.
Think you're overthinking it - it's no big deal. Guy probably just got super busy and isn't able to set aside time to chat right now. No need to allude to it when you eventually interact
Thanks man. Will do. I think I'll follow up once more, but if that doesn't work then whatever. Will just smile and wave this summer. I was just more concerned about how to tell the senior. So it's cool to just say something like "oh I haven't been able to connect yet" when he asks?
Yes that’s fine but make sure your phrasing doesn’t imply the analyst is at fault in any way
Yeah totally. Look let's be honest, the senior isn't stupid and would know from what I say that the analyst didn't respond, so my goal is to not get the analyst on trouble. Appreciate your advice. If he's asking me how it went, I'm sure he's asking his jr too.
