I'm guessing Getco is on the neutrino bandwagon.....
FTL ==> violation of causality
It's two parts per million faster. So aside from maybe detecting blasts from supernovas from a couple thousand light years away and warning folks to get inside or put on SPF 2000 sunblock, it doesn't have much practical use as of yet.
I wonder if this violates the event horizon or if we're seeing something else going on. Oh well, a lot of theoretical physicists are going to be very confused. Thank god us engineers got to stop at Thermo.

physicist here. if this is true this would be mindblowing. most important experimental discovery for the past 100 years.
if this is true it implies breakdown of causality in time ==> time travel
the problem is that the pop articles aren't clear on the details

there are things tha move faster than light but not in a way that can transmit information. look up EPR pair measurements. those have been done for a while.
also, is this SOL in vacuum? SOL in slow light experiments is slower than a bicycle. look up lene hau at harvard for more details.
if it isn't these things, perhaps neutrinos are tunneling through the riemann 4-manifold. that would again, be fucking mindblowing. a new world of physics would open up.
hopefully this isn't an issue of them forgetting to carry the 7.
OK, I was hoping to be able to keep up with this thread here...
In light the discovery that dark matter/energy is 95% of the universe and we only know it exists by inference, I venture to bet that relativity will go the way of Newton's laws at some point. Probably not for a while, but eventually. This is cool stuff.
This makes as much sense as Copernicus's babbling

There are already a large number of paradoxes caused by the speed of light, however they cannot be recreated yet so unable to test. Now we have the chance don't hold your breath this time around, but this would be incredible if its possible.
"I suspect that the bulk of the scientific community will not take this as a definitive result unless it can be reproduced by at least one and preferably several experiments," says V. Alan Kostelecky
That's one fucking brilliant theorist...
Saw a follow-up on this in the paper yesterday. I didn't read the whole article, but apparently there was some faulty equipment that led to bad data. Einstein still rules...
The piece you read is incomplete though. They found two faults, the one you are talking about and another glitch that could have caused the experiment to underestimate the particles' speed. http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2012/02/official-word-on-supe…

I guess I should have finished the article. :)
Pretty positive I read something that said that a loose wire was pretty much confirmed to be the reason for inaccurate data
