New Laptop from HP

So my HP laptop of 2-3 years is coming apart at the seams where the monitor meets the keyboard, for all intents and purposes it is a desktop.

Now I'm looking to upgrade(or rather downgrade) to a more utilitarian laptop. I had questions regarding the AMD Quad Core and the Intel i3 or i5, which is better or in what circumstances does each preform better, e.g. i3 has a better battery life?

My current setup is an i5 with 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 635M graphics card and 17" monitor, and prolly 500GB Solid State Drive HD.

I will not use this computer for anything other than excel, ppt, word, internet(multiple tabs open at a time, like 12-20). I used my previous one for gaming, but I just won't have time to game anymore unless it's a stupid flash game.

Want to spend in the 300-400 range, shoot if you have any questions. Also it seems that every package deal always has a downside, like on their website I saw a tight setup but then it had 4GB RAM, I was thinking I could just add my 8GB RAM into an empty slot on the new laptop, but would this void the warranty?
