New Meds b/c of Coronavirus

Covid has me going cray - psychiatrist just prescribed me an antipsychotic. For those not in the loop means I have psychosis. Any monkeys chompin on meds left, right, front and center now that you are confined indoors?

Just piece of friendly advice from a pharmacologist here, unless you have a clinically diagnosed need to take any of these drugs (ADHD, MDD, GAD etc) you really should avoid them or minimize their use. If you pop them like M&Ms throughout quarantine and this ends up lasting another 2-3 months, you'll have most certainly generated a form of dependency. Then when you back to being around people, these behaviors will manifest themselves in a more pronounced way. Not great.

given your expertise, I have a few questions I don’t feel comfortable asking my doc. how quickly do you build a dependency on addy? I don’t take any pills for any reason (prescribed and OTC) but going into banking has me worried that I’ll need it. doesn’t it act like caffeine? so If I have a dependency on caffeine, it won’t help as much? again I’ve never taken any prescription drugs so not sure how to think about this.

Adderall is an amphetamine and is closer to cocaine than it is to caffeine. All 3 stimulants can lead to dependency but timelines vary based on you, how much you take and how your body adapts to it. Again, unless you have a clinically diagnosed reason for taking it I guarantee you won't NEED it. If you think you will because of the concentration boost it gives you, you should know 3 things. 1. You won't necessarily become more productive at all, you may just focus on doing one thing over and over again. 2. You'll experience a come down that you don't usually get with caffeine because it is less potent. 3. It can lead to heart issue (abnormally fast heart rate, hypertension etc) which may be a real problem if you have any underlying conditions that you may be unaware of.

If you want to try and stay focused/energetic for long periods of time the best things you can do are: stay well hydrated, drink caffeine in moderation and at the right times (caffeine can also give you dips in energy during the "come down" phase, eat healthy and relatively light at lunch, get some exercise in during the day and try psychologically stimulating rhythmic concentration patterns like the Pomodoro Method for boring tasks.

Honestly, some people may think that wrecking their bodies for 18-24 months is nothing in the context of a 40-year career. The truth is that dependency and addiction can creep in much faster than that, so even when you leave IB you'll have some issues to deal with and need to dedicate time and effort to weening yourself off the excessive stimulant exposure you experienced.

TL;DR - Adderral dependency can creep in rapidly, it has no real benefits without a medical need for it so I would avoid it and stick to caffeine combined with healthy habits

Viagra. Stress and age, nearing 40. Thankfully no heart disease or diabetes. Thought it was mainly psychological but I’m a different man I was a couple months ago, I think on the physical front. Just hit a wall. Went from being able to have sex for 30+ mins (any time, any place) to 5 mins (and I need foreplay). Combine that with a lack of movement due to WFH, and I was getting into heavy lifting to boost testosterone at the gym, but that ended in early March. I feel like a wimp.

My ED started pre-COVID in February but my Viagra comes in a few days in the mail. I’m looking forward to trying. I never take any meds, so I will try not to get dependent. Doctor warned me, a boner for longer than 3 hours, I have to go to the ER. Going to the ER during this pandemic scares the shit out of me.

Everyone wants to own a business, but almost not having enough money to pay payroll for 150 people is a downside, and feeling responsible for people’s livelihoods.

I start thinking about my stressors during sex and well that led to ED. Nothing really stressed me out before, not big deals, deadlines but the payroll did it. Work wise things are better. Coming to grips that ED is common among men.

Reminds me what my dad would tell me. He was in his late 60’s already, a widow, and definitely had ED. He said marital problems often arise from two things: trouble with finances or in the bedroom.

The circle of life continues. Ironically, I was having sex twice a week before February. Wife and I would go out and get drunk. Married for almost 20 years. Worst time for ED during this stay at home period. My lifestyle sucks - work, eat meal, work, sleep (sometimes ride my stationary bike), drink on the weekends. Work work work. No sex, or I mean no good sex for the past two months. Viagra’s, coming.

I’m more candid with this anonymous posting. At least maybe this will entertain you (or if you are experiencing similar, know you are not alone). You young monkeys may not understand now. But, POW! Or it can be a slower onset. Now I know why there are some weird exotic (and expensive) Chinese medicine like tigers balls (I don’t know, making this up) to increase male vitality. An age old problem and one that would compel most men to want to solve.
