No Connections in IB Recruiting

What is the average percentage of analysts in each class have connections like family, close friend, etc? (not networking). How difficult would it be if I don't know anyone in IB, except for those that I have networked with?

How does this impact career progression?

You don’t need to have a parent in IB to get in - I knew no one in IB other then networking contacts and made it in just fine (SA for 2021).

Can’t tell you what the percentage looks like or what the progression looks like but can confirm that you’re definitely able to do it - good luck!

Got it, thanks! Did you have any hooks, like target school, internships etc ?

Had an internship at a startup and worked on their seed round funding deal so that was pretty cool - then did an internship in back-office - other than that, non-target school and I'm from a no-name Canadian east-coast town. The first internships were pretty cool but didn't give me a lot of "high finance" experience - all networking tbh

I'm Canadian too and was in a similar position. I grew up in a very rural area and went to university in Ontario. Networking my a** off is what really made the biggest difference for me. There is nothing more valuable than being able to brand yourself as likeable and hardworking, which is difficult to do with just a resume. Also, I used my small town background to my advantage. It differentiated me from everyone else, and allowed me to tell an interesting story about growing up on a farm and moving to the city to work in finance.

I can definitely confirm it is 100% possible! I went through several rejections before getting an offer, so don't get discouraged... It takes time and practice.

I am a non-target, non-diversity (overrepresented minority (Asian)), international student. Also didn't have a summer internship for 2020 (fuck you COVID), and didn't intern in IB previously. Got an offer from a top group for SA 2021. It is definitely a grind, but I think it's very much possible without previously knowing anyone.
