Noob at WSO
Hey guys,
I am completely new to Finance and WSO. I have a job at one of the top BBs (as they are called on wikipedia - Bulge Bracket, I guess) and am expected to join after summer 2014.
My work profile is that of a Credit Risk analyst. For someone who is from an engineering background, could anybody tell me what sort of work does a credit risk analyst do. Is it considered intellectual/respectful? What are the exit options and if someone stays in the job, what can one go on to achieve?
Also, since I have practically zero knowledge about Finance, what should I do to get me up to pace and perform well on the job?
P.S. - The location of this job is in India. The bank is one of the biggies from New York.
So... this job was given to you?
Well, of course not on a platter. The way it works at my school is that since it is a reputed "Engineering" school, they don't expect the candidates to know finance. All they look for is good analytical skills which they judge through their aptitude test. The recruitment had 3 rounds comprising of Aptitude test, Case-studies,Personal interviews, none of which had questions on Finance.
Just wait until your first day. They will give you wall the materials you need.
If possible, could you brief me a bit about what the role encompasses or link me to any resource where I could read up more about it?
Welcome!
Well, judging by the recruitment process and your background, it seems like you wont have to worry about "preparing" for your start. It will most likely be on the job training. I am a Chemical Engineer, but work for an EPC company, so I don't know much about finance. I am sure you can google it up to find out more. Good luck.
Quite a coincidence. I am a Chemical Engineer myself.
I think you are talking about JPM CAU. its a great opportunity and the job is well respected. Make sure you get secondments and use them well.
Get to know an industry well as much of your work will be industry focused but also keep in mind that cau is a captive kpo. You will never really get front end work, just industry analysis and some very basic modeling. You'll have to learn detailed modeling yourself. All the best.
