Oppenheimer & Co Analyst Program Details

I was wondering if people could give some detail/insight about the analyst program.

Questions:

Analyst class size?

Where does Oppenheimer & Co. rank compared to other middle-market banks?

Which groups are the strongest?

Hours (Work/Life balance) compared to other middle-market banks in NY?

Exit Ops?

Thank you.

I can answer a few:

  • Generally aims for 20-25 for NYC per analyst class. Some other analysts across regional offices like Houston, Miami, Baltimore, SF, etc but not sure on numbers for those offices.
  • I would say it’s your bread and butter middle market shop, so shops like Piper, RJ, HW, HL, etc.
  • I was averaging around 80-90 when I was an analyst in my coverage group but they were pretty good about respecting Friday and Saturday nights
  • I’d say Healthcare M&A & Services and M&A are probably the strongest in terms of M&A (obviously). I remember FIG and TMT doing some solid deals also and I know that those groups have been hiring seniors aggressively.
  • In terms of exit ops, there’s always the few outliers that go to KKR or Providence but most people generally go to MMPE shops like HIG and such. A decent chunk also move upstream to other banks. Quick LinkedIn search will probably be more helpful but also have seen some interesting exit ops recently, such as 26North.

Oppenheimer should not be compared with Piper, HW, and HL with all due respect.
