PE Internship to S&T?

Hello everyone, I'm a junior undergrad at a non-target. I was able to line up a private equity internship with one of the top megafunds (think KKR, TPG, BX, Carlyle, Warburg) through networking. However, my ultimate goal is to go into sales & trading. Thus far, I have not been able to land any S&T internships. So, I'd like to know what everyone thinks. Will the prestige of interning for a top PE firm be enough to leverage a full-time S&T position? Or because of the differences between PE and S&T, will I need to participate in a S&T internship program to break into S&T? Thanks in advance for your input.

Did you have a very close contact at the MF? I'm sure they can refer you to someone and go to bat for you.

Yeah, its a pretty close contact (friend of a family member). It's also not one of the main offices, but a smaller office that focuses on sourcing. So, I'm sure I will have a good amount of interaction with everyone in the office.

It'll depend some on your contacts and how the rest of your resume/GPA looks but it shouldn't be a problem if you've got a big name on your resume. I'm at a non-target and did my junior internship in M&A before accepting FT in S&T at a different bank. A lot of what you do in S&T is learned on the job so the relevant internship experience won't be as necessary.

That's great to hear. I should graduate with around a 3.5 GPA, and my resume looks pretty good. Just curious, will I be able to leverage a S&T position at a good BB firm? Or will I have to take a position at a smaller firm? How big is the bank where you accepted the FT position?

My bank is a large MM (HSBC, RBS, BNP, BMO). That's a better GPA than I had, not to mention I majored in Middle Eastern History. But what I did do is spend a lot of time building a network which if you spend your time doing, I can't see why you wouldn't be able to land a good MM with a BB being a bit of a stretch.

Start reaching out to alumni at MM and BB your interested in and just begin laying the foundation and building the relationship. They don't necessarily have to be in S&T either.
