PE to GE/VC

Just finished up my first year as a PE Associate and know for a fact I want to leave as soon as my contract is up. What is the process like when trying to make the move to more sourcing heavy GE/VC roles? Do they recruit a year in advance similar to traditional on-cycle? Would obviously love to lock something down in advance. I don’t want to to commit to a third year at my current firm and ultimately screw my team over but also don’t want to be without a job if I can’t lock something down in time. Has anyone been in this situation and can share their story?
