Physical Commodity Broker -> Sales
How relevant are the skills learned as a physical broker to an equity trading floor and how likely would it be that a candidate with two years of experience in a physical commodity shop as a trader could make a transition to sales at a bank?
why equities and not commodities? are you brokering softs or something?
Yes... the reason for the switch is that I would like to be working in a more urban area. Also, from what I understand there are better exit opportunities for equity traders.
Get stuck out at a grain elevator for a couple years working the ABCD grind? Happened to me! It is possible to get out but it is a tough slog. That said, I'm not sure equities is the place to be. Personally I moved to energy commodities and that got me away from the country elevator. It's hard though, requires a lot of networking and a lot more luck. That said, if you're comfortable with urban Midwest, there are tons of physical agricultural commodity jobs in Kansas City, Minneapolis, Omaha, and other Midwestern cities.
Well hey the more you network the more lucky you get, right? Thats just my thought.
I've been out there networking and I have gotten a few introductions with traders across different commodities but my question is how do I frame my experience as an asset to a new field.
While I understand that I cannot focus on the negatives I do realize that I'm unable to bring relationships or market knowledge so what do I bring to the table?.... my guess would be attitude.
How did you frame yourself in both your resume and the interview process?
P.S.>I don't work at an ABCD, but I do work at the top shop for my commodity.
