Pitching original ideas vs ideas from 13Fs/VIC

For hedge fund interviews is there a set expectation that all your ideas will be 100% original, or is it fine to pitch stocks from 13Fs or ideas from VIC to the extent that you've done your own research and understand the investment?

Asking because given the limited free time in IB, trying to figure out the proper balance between researching new ideas or fleshing out existing ideas.

Thanks in advance!

"Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's not a threat, that's a fact.
