Podcast recommendations

I've seen threads recently for film / tv recommendations, so I was wondering if people have any good podcast recs?

I typically listen the most to history / true crime but would love to listen to some interesting finance podcasts. Non-finance ones are welcome too.

Agree with Jocko. I tend to skip the ones where it's just Jocko and Echo. They have some amazing guests - the ones about MAC-V SOG in Vietnam are the definition of insane. You literally could not make crazier stories up than what they talk about.

I'm not a big self-help guy, but Jocko preaches very simple "mantras" that I believe all humans could benefit from implementing into their lives. "Discipline equals freedom" is true.

Also, Jocko practices what he preaches. Dude is the definition of a badass, but he's extremely humble. I skip the last 30 minutes of his podcasts where they shill their supplements and other stuff, but the meat and potatoes where they bring on guests and basically let them talk for a few hours is awesome.

Joe Rogan, whether you agree with his views or not, is a great interviewer. I like listening to his podcasts when I don't have anything to do. Who knew I would listen to him talking about UFO's with Post Malone for 4 hours?

John Stryker Meyer has a podcast but I haven't listened to any episodes. He's one of the MAC-V SOG guests from Jocko's podcast

That was a great one. The ones with Tim Dillon (and Alex Jones also), especially the most recent one, are hilarious too.

By far the most entertaining Joe Rogan episode I've listened to David Choe (episode 1518). The guy is an absolute freak but he's got so many stories. Only episode I will ever recommend that someone has to listen to. Also has two prior episodes with him but 1518 is my favorite

The History of the Cold War on Spotify is really good, very detailed.

yeah I used to like him but he embellishes a lot. I like 'that chapter' Channel, more to do with murders.

Lots of great recommendations.

All around: Tim Ferris

Health: Andrew Huberman, Peter Attia

Military: Cleared Hot (Andy Stumpf), Jocko

Entertainment: Business Wars (this one is underrated imo), JRE

hardcore history, jocko, lex fridman, econtalk, uncommon knowledge (hoover institute), infinite loops, duncan trussell, and dave rubin or breaking points if I really want something political

if you speak spanish - el estoico, la fonda filosófica, entiende tu mente, ted en español

and a word on rogan. I listen to him a good bit but mostly because he gets interesting guests. the more I listen to him, the more I think he's just a curious and open minded guy, if you're going there for insight outside of his own personal experience with psychedelics, jiu jitsu, etc., you may be disappointed. he's definitely been a net positive for my life (introduced me to several interesting people), but if you want an intellectually stimulating exchange, go to lex fridman

Daybreak, (it's only on the pro app) The Economist AM and The Daily for work.  For fun? I like Dear Hank & John, Delete This, and Numberphile.  (Yeah I'm a nerd) Most missed podcast? Hello Internet.  What they did with the Radio Times poll was HILARIOUS. (The RT didn't release vote counts, but I think they got more votes than there are people on the planet--How the f*** would they explain that)

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

All of these are besides the standard fare of WSJ, Pardon My Take, etc.

  • All-in with Chamath, Jason, etc - obviously take it with a grain of salt but it's fascinating hearing these guys talk about the VC scene because they are all very candid and in the middle of it. This week in startups is really good too if you like Calicanus
  • Stratechery (Paid podcast) - Just a audio version of paid blog but it is required reading IMO
  • Business Breakdowns - Actual breakdowns of business models, very approachable and no hand-wavy bullshit. Found very similar to my MBA
  • Initial Review of "Big Swinging Decks" - a very charismatic former banker talks to a dude with the vibe of your-friend-from-home-visiting-you-at-college. Like, it could be really good if Marc (who was at Centerview and Laz HC) was the main push - honestly think that dude has a ton of talent and will go far - but the instagram dude kinda insists on tossing in some cringy comments (in my opinion) while remaining weirdly anonymous. They've only had one episode so maybe they'll get better but that was my hot take.

No like, the analysis reminds me of my MBA strategy classes

That MBA podcast looks kinda trash if you're trying to do literally anything besides consulting or tech post MBA. Makes sense tho - those 2 are probably the largest contingent by far.

Surprised to see Rave Dubin here, I think the guys is a joke (as evidenced by mountains of footage of him getting "dunked" on) but maybe I'm biased.

Odd Lots is the best all around business podcast imo; Masters in Business has some good guests on usually but Barry can be a bit whiny at times; Breaking Points is one of the true non-partisan political podcasts; Business Breakdowns is also very good.

Also for any history nerds Mark Felton on YouTube has amazing WW2 video shorts that are incredibly detailed yet digestible, I think he's severely underrated.

Philosophize This. After finishing all the  ~130 episodes (25 minutes each) you will think completely different.

It's the only Podcast which really got me. Tim Ferris, Jocko, etc. and all of those about self-improvement really don't get me because after you read 10 - 15 self-improvement books and 2 or 3 of Tim Ferris books, you will see that episodes are very repetitive. The idea is that if you want to learn what they talk about 1 hour in their podcast you can open any Tim Ferris book and he will explain it in one page.

Now, with Philosophy you couldn't do that, so give it a try.

True Crime Podcast: Last Podcast on the Left - one of the all-around GOAT podcasts...very funny and they put serious work into their research

Interview Podcast: People I Mostly Admire w/ Steve Levitt from Freakonomics. Want to give an alternative to Ferris and Rogan and have been really loving this one lately. Great guests that you wouldn't necessarily find on the JRE/TF circuit and the discussions often change the way I think about a given topic.

Serialized Podcast: There are a ton of great ones in this category that blew up with Serial. I liked S-Town a lot and more recently Whistleblower which is about the Tim Donaghy scandal in the NBA.

Fun / Light Podcast: Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. One of my absolute favorites, put it on almost every morning as I drive to the office. Very light-hearted way to start the day

History: History of Ancient Rome by Duncan

Comedy - Flagrant 2 w/ Andrew Schulz, Going Deep With Chad and JT, Whiskey Ginger with Andrew Santino

News - I would HIGHLY recommend "World News with BK". 2.5 hours, weekly podcast and covers U.S. and foreign news.

Interests/Sports- Joe Rogan, The Late Kick with Josh Pate (College Football), Spittin' Chiclets (Hockey), Cleared Hot with Andy Stumpf
