Potential Portfolio Administrator Exit Ops

I received an offer from a fixed income fund company for their portfolio administrator role that mainly deals with various types of reconciliations.

Since this role is more accounting focused rather than finance focused, do you think that there are any exit ops into more research roles(analyst) of finance coming out of this position?

Not really. It's a back office OP's role and doesn't have anything to do with research or investment related analysis. Could you move from that role to an Analyst role some day? Yes, but i t will be through a lot of other transitional moves first. You would have to get an MBA and hope to get an Analyst position through that route, or somehow try to lateral from back office to something in research, like a Research Associate position, and then eventually get promoted to Analyst or move to a different shop as an Analyst. It will be extremely tough to do, moving to research from doing reconciliations, but not impossible if you manage to network really well and pass some CFA exams.

Thank you for your response.

The reason I am considering this is because when I interviewed with the firm they said that this is pretty much their entry level position. I will be working at their headquarters and the analysts make on average 86k after bonuses so that makes me think that the analyst role is not an entry level position.

The offer is low in terms of salary; however, they have great benefits and they pay for your CFA. What I was considering doing was to take the position and learn as much as possible about fixed income while passing some CFA exams.

Do you think this would be a good path? If not, do you have an example of what I should be attempting to do instead?

The firm is Western Asset Management by the way.
