Pre-University Summer jobs

Hey guys,

I'lll be starting university this October and will (hopefully) be going to a target University to do straight economics (Bsc). Careerwise I am hoping to get into equities/derivatives.

The question i want to ask is seeing how it is very difficult to get work experience directly related to the fields Im interested in and in the types of firms i hope to work for before university, what sorts of job should apply for over the summer? All of my friends are either working in retail (clothing stores) or arent looking for a job at all. My logic was that when it comes to applying for internships next year, atleast with a job i can show i am used to working in a working environment and am not someone whos just been through the education system for almost 15 years with no people skills.

I guess what im asking here is, what do you guys think the most productive way would be for me to spend my long summer?

At the moment im spending time to gain an understanding of the stock market (reading books/magazines and using the stock simulator over on investopedia), which regardless of how my carreer plans go, i intend to do on the side when im older (and actually have money to invest...)

Any advice is much appreciated; there isnt really anyone i can talk to about this sort of stuff - im one of only 2 in my year at school looking to work in this field and no family are in the field either.

J.:
I would think it a good idea to possibly shoot out some networking emails about the field your looking into, I changes my career choice in finance 3 times.

what do you mean by shooting out some networking emails?
