Government can't work if the primary goal of the minority party is to overthrow the president by undermining all legislation. The goal of the Republican party is to topple the President of the United States, and they've been very open about it. Their goal isn't to make America better or stronger, it's to make sure the Democrats fail, and if that means America has to fail along with it, so be it.

What do we call people whose goal is to destroy America? If Vladimir Putin held a press conference and said "The primary goal of Russia is to overthrow the President of the United States," what would happen? Why do we hold Republicans to a different standard.

Glad someone else thinks the same thing. I come here after reading reddit to get away from hipsters whose arguments always consist of coughing up past reddit headlines

i agree with you Even Nouriel Roubini said on Bloomberg that the Republicans not interested in a economic recovery for political reasons at this point

What do we call those people whose goal is to destroy America?

Democrats.

Oh, and that was the dumbest thing I've seen you post. We overthrow POTUS every 4-8 years and the beauty of this country is you can talk shit about the party in power.

This is all coming from a guy who probably was yelling for Bush to be impeached a few years back. In closing: cool story, bro.

The Democrats didn't defund the military when Bush invaded Iraq just so they could turn around to blame the president for the quagmire, they let him fight the war in good faith.

The Democrats didn't defund the DOE after the passing of No Child Left Behind just so they could turn around and blame the president when it was ineffectual. They let it run its course in good faith.

The Democrats didn't defund the FBI and CIA after the passing of the Patriot Act just so they could turn around and blame the president for the next terrorist attack. They let him carry it out in good faith.

The Republicans have acted to defunded the SEC just as we passed financial reform so as to ensure no regulation actually occurs.

There's a difference.

So because the Democrats didn't try and defund something they were morally opposed to, the Republicans shouldn't? Sounds like one party has a spine and the other likes to bitch a lot with little or no action.

That's not how a healthy government operates!

When Thomas Jefferson was president, the Federalist and Democratic-Republican parties hated each other. When Jefferson conducted the Louisiana Purchase, it was well outside of his constitutional abilities, and the Federalists gave him a ton of shit for it - but they didn't vote to not pay France for the purchase after Jefferson made the deal.

The last time one party chose to undermine the other in such a flippant way was the Civil War. Democracy means the majority gets to rule for a few years, and if it isn't working, then they get kicked out. The people spoke in 2000 to elect Republicans, and Democrats allowed for Republican policy. The people spoke in 2008 to elect Democrats, but the Republicans said "to hell with democracy, if we can't steer this ship, we'll burn it to the ground."

And the country spoke in 2010 when they gave the Republicans the majority in the House .... you have to be in grade school.

Imagine it's 1962 and the United States just found out that the Russians are trying to put nukes on Cuba to target us. President Kennedy moves to set up a quarantine around Cuba to prevent any ships bound for Cuba from passing through. The Republican party immediately moves to defund the US Navy and tells Kennedy that there will be no quarantine unless the top marginal tax rate, which was 90% at the time, is lowered to 20% immediately. There are calls within the Republican party to impeach Kennedy immediately for acting unilaterally. While JFK deals with this political quagmire, the Soviets quietly set up nuclear missiles in Cuba and point them at the United States. By the time Congress passes legislation to lower the tax rate to 20%, the Cuban nukes are already operational, and Kennedy's approval falls to 30%.

It's not that much of a stretch. While we squabble amongst ourselves, other countries are running laps around us and laughing. One party cannot hold the other hostage by putting a gun to America's face and threatening to pull the trigger.

Ugh, okay... WTF are you talking about?

Defunding the entire US Navy when the USSR is setting up nukes on Cuba? Countries running laps around us?

Being upset over $14 Trillion in debt and nationalizing big chunks of govt does not equal defunding the entire US Navy while the USSR is shooting nukes at us....

What countries are currently running laps around us? The rest of the world is having the same talks we are having right now. Europe is bankrupt, China's economy has slowed and is tied to our consumerism, Japan is underwater (okay bad joke) and still hurting from the same shit we are doing now that they did in the 90s, etc etc.

For Christs sake at least have an argument that makes some kind of logical sense with FACTS. Get off Moveon dude.

It was an analogy. You'll learn about them in 4th grade, but let me spell it out for you since it appears you haven't gotten there yet. When one party has control of the government and tries to enact national policy, it is not the job of the other party to put a knife to the nation's throat and threaten to cut it unless they get everything they want.

Being upset over $14 trillion is fine, but that does not justify threatening to default on that debt. Threatening to default on our debt in the middle of a recession is ANALOGOUS to defunding our military in the middle of a Cold War. Threatening not to pass the START treaty unless our nation extends the Bush Tax Cuts is also ANALOGOUS to defunding the military in the middle of the Cold War.

By the way, I don't know if you've noticed, but the US used to have the #1 education system in the world. Now we're #14. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/dec/07/world-education-ran…

We used to have the #1 health care system in the world. Now we are ranked #37. http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html

Last year we had 2.83% real GDP growth. That ranks us at #117 in the world. #117! Over 100 nations had more GDP growth than us last year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_real_GDP_growth_rate_…
