PT MBA and CFA? or PT MBA and work full time in an unrelated field?
I was accepted to the NYU Part time MBA program and will begin this Fall. I have 4 years of work experience as a financial and operational auditor, no experience working in a bank (front of back office role), and am trying to figure out what career path I want to take once I graduate.
A little about my background:
* B.S. in finance and econ
* Passed Level 1 of the CFA
There are two paths I am seriously considering and was hoping for some feedback to help me decide:
Option 1)
- Part time MBA and study for the CFA full time. Pass level 2 and 3 and graduate with an MBA within 2 years. While at school, take advantage of the networking opportunities and career services offered to secure a job in investment management (exploring opportunities in asset management and IB alike).
- Pros: (1) Graduate with an MBA and CFA. (2) Complete program in 2 years.
- Cons: (1) Uncertain career outlook – without any work experience I would have to market myself well in order to get employers to take a chance on me. (2) Would only be beneficial for a career in investment management (this is not really a bad thing, but something I am aware of). (3) Will have to pay for the MBA out of pocket.
Option 2)
- Part time MBA while working full time. Continue to apply internally for positions that interest me and take advantage of the networking opportunities and career services offered.
- Pros: (1) Employer will pay for MBA.
- Cons: (1) Nearly eliminates opportunities in asset management and IB (this is IMO, but would like to know if I am right or wrong in your view) (2) Will likely take 3 years, instead of 2, to complete the MBA. (3) Cannot study for the CFA while studying for the MBA (may not be realistic to study for the CFA after 3 years only to complete all levels a min of 2 years after completing the MBA).
For the sake of this conversation, assume applying for another job outside my current employer is not possible.
Thanks!
Hi willBe, any of these discussions helpful:
No promises, but thought I'd mention a few relevant users that work in the industry: @jdavidsigmon" collier rawdoge
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
Having passed level 2 I would choose option 2. You can take the CFAs later on, and if you do intend to go to AM it will probably be mandatory. Having a salary and getting your MBA paid for is a no brainer in my view (I have 2 kids, might be a biased due to higher needs of liquidity)
Also, level 2 is a beast, so assuming on option 1 that in 2 years you will be done with the CFA might not be as easy as it seems.
The thing that is certain is that NYU is a good school and you should network the hell out of it, esp. if you want to ain to AM or IB.
Yeah I agree. I've been thinking about this a lot lately and talking to quite a few people and I'm leaning toward the same conclusion.
I'm not sure if I will want to study more after doing the MBA to be honest, but the sponsorship is too much to look the other way.
