pulled chest? what's wrong with me

Hey guys, about a month ago was working out and did 2 back to back days of bench presses (no idea why) and on my last set felt intense tightness in my left pectoral. now when i go to the gym and do heavy benches, my left pec instantly gets super tight. any idea what's up? happens when i do dips/pullups as well, but don't feel it on normal day to day

any idea what's up?

Not a doctor, just an MD (had to say it). I've done deadlifts before where I felt a sharp pain and instantly stopped working out for the day because of it. I usually feel like most injuries are a pulled muscle (not a torn muscle) but my recommendation is wane off the heavy chest and just do RICE plus Ibuprofen (or some anti-inflammatory pills) until you feel better. Maybe some light chest exercises for now to get some blood flow in there. If it was a torn muscle I just feel like you'd have visual bruising and swelling (think bicep tear) versus a pulled muscle is more like a strain from going to heavy, not properly warming up e.t.c.

Edit: Also visiting a doctor if it doesn't go away in 2 weeks would be a good call. Just work the muscle to the range of motion you can (i.e. don't go all the way down and risk injury again unless you're doing it with very light weight).

Leg days will help chest recovery - anything to get the blood moving without using your pecs.

I hear you man. I fucked my back over a month ago and am still dealing with it. Sounds like it could be a slight tear in pectoral muscle. Chest is one of those things you'll just have to leave and let heal sadly, would recommend giving it a couple weeks of rest.

The amount of broscience from unqualified and inexperienced people in this thread is scary. There is an innumerable amount of things this could be, from pec tear, to lat strain, to shoulder impingement, to rotator cuff issue, to a partially collapsed clavicle. Nobody is going to be able to diagnose this over the internet and anyone who attempts to do so is misguided and providing potentially further injurious advice. Go see a doctor and/or sports physio to get a real qualified answer and plan of attack to remedy the issue.

Agreed with Thomas - loved your work in Gravity's Rainbow by the way.

I herniated a disc back about a year ago. I thought it was a muscle strain, everyone else told me to just chill for a week and hop back on it. Fast forward 6 months later and I couldn't even walk/lay down without intense sciatica. Had to go to the ER, and I wasn't even lifting at that point (stopped because of COVID - still haven't been back to the gym really ever since I herniated the disc).

Moral of the story: go see a doctor before you make yourself need surgery. It could be an easy fix now, or an invasive procedure later when you push yourself because everyone on the internet cleared you for lifting.
