Putting RE career into context

Looking for some insight to how my career could develop. I am thinking I would want to be a senior acquisitions guy or eventually do my own deals or work with a repe firm. What are your thoughts on my current path and how someone would perceive me in the market place.

  1. Worked in commercial lending in banking as an underwriter looking at acquisition and development loans, construction loans, general commercial real estate loans for investors including homebuilding, multi-family, mini-storage, industrial, mobile home parks, and retail property types for 4 years.

  2. I took a new a new role as an acquisitions analyst for a developer/builder looking at thinking that combining financing and acquisitions experience would position myself nicely in the market place.

  3. I have an undergrad degree in accounting and I am currently finishing my MBA at a good mid-tier school.

  4. Knowing this info I'm interested to here from the community how I would be perceived by different firm types and real estate professionals. Thx for your insight in advance.

Awesome that you realize what part of the business you want to be in. Congrats on getting a job after your MBA. I think you are at a good starting point in terms of learning the acquisition / development process if you are part of the underwriting, legal documentation, Asset Management, and disposition process at your firm.

I would work for 1-2 years at your new firm hopefully by then you'll have closed on some deals that you've worked on. Then I would start applying to REPE jobs because if you wait too long you will probably have climbed too far up the ladder in terms of experience and comp to jump over and make a lateral move to REPE.
