It will be an interview in the sense that you are always being evaluated, but no, it will not be conducted like an interview.
Yes, you should ask about his background if he does not volunteer it (which he probably will do).
You should prepare questions (to the extent that you can) pertaining to his work. Spend some time beforehand learning about sell-side research in general, and maybe about what he does in particular - this should give you some material to start a conversation. As you chat, you should be able to "organically" move ahead, asking questions as they come up, etc.
