RE Valuation to RE Investment

I'm a 2nd-year RE valuation associate at an accounting firm looking to transition to a career on the investment/asset management/finance side of the industry. My experience is in appraising all types of commercial assets. My ideal job would be as an asset manager for a principal but I'm open to other opportunities in order to get there. Has anyone made this similar career transition? Any advice on how to break into the industry would be appreciated!

Also, new to WSO and have already learned a ton! thx

Can't give you any insight or advice but I just want to thank you for not saying REPE

Yes, people can and do transition from valuation to principal side roles, not the easiest route but not all that hard either. Truly, this is networking is best method type of transition. I personally know several people working in investment/development as well as IS/capital markets brokerage who started in appraisal/valuation. Knowing how to do valuation and market analysis will be valuable to acquisitions, research/strategy, and asset management as well.

You could use an MBA or MSRE/D as part of a transition/level-up strategy. Roles in institutional real estate increasingly require grad degrees for entry, especially at the top levels. Maybe you can get your firm to pay for part of it.
