Recent Laterals - how long y’all staying?
Hey guys,
Recently lateralled to a group as a first year with 1 year of experience. Lateraled because wanted an EB with more $ and better experience, but not necessarily looking to stay in banking.
The issue is that laterals in past years usually stay 1-3 years as they are hired under the impression of wanting to stay in banking long term. Certainly not the case for me. Given buyside recruiting will probably kick off late summer for roles in dec-July of next year, when is the earliest time that is okay to leave? I honestly can’t imagine staying 2 years, barely can imagine staying 1… just don’t know if it will look horrible if I leave in under a year. I know other laterals are probably in this boat. Thoughts?
Bump, same q here
Exiting a top EB in the next few weeks to take a buy side gig. Slightly worried about burning bridges but am moreso relieved to just get out of banking. Curious about how other laterals are thinking / planning this jump
just stay in banking, it's honestly a much more chill gig than PE and you can make it all the way up to Director by just grinding it out for a few years. Then once you've built up a nest egg you can parachute into a safe gig in middle-management corp dev for some mid-cap company. EZ money, EZ life.
easier said than done...
This was basically my plan pre-covid, but then there were VPs on here saying they're working basically the same amount as analysts due to wfh and that sounds like hell
yeah and the last year has also been hell for PE VPs, not like banking was much worse.
This expectation probably should’ve been discussed during the lateral process, but maybe ask the people in the class above you. I think my group brought in laterals under the expectation they stay 2 years. Not that you have to stay, but it just might be tougher to get the references and support from you group if you’re leaving a full year early. My group was generally highly supportive of recruiting (MDs would call their contacts at PE shops, teams were supportive of interviews, etc), but I don’t think this would’ve been the case if leaving a year early.
I am in a very small team (think 7 people from Analyst to MD) so there isn't anyone I can ask about the the recruiting-stance of the team asides from the other analyst who also freshly started. I don't plan on bringing this up at least for another few years, but how would you usually have this conversation with the people who could vouch for you?
Also are you at a BB in a group that regularly sends analysts/associates to PE?
Have same question - would love to hear about what laterals have done recently as opposed to our current plan
My group gave me a contract for a year (joined as an analyst finishing their first year) so I’m probably expected to stay a year. If I can get a better job before that year is up I will 20000% be doing that.
Same what are other laterals doing…
you have to understand that no one, other than yourself, really cares. like, they may say no you cant do that, but they truly give no shit about you
Is it bad to stay at a lateral firm -5-8 months?
Staying as short as I can
Fucc it
very interesting...
Minimally for 2 years +few months (full three years in IB) and I can very possibly see myself staying on as an associate. I’m not repulsed by the hours & work, am learning a ton, and am not on the traditional path.
