Recent Laterals - how long y’all staying?

Hey guys,

Recently lateralled to a group as a first year with 1 year of experience. Lateraled because wanted an EB with more $ and better experience, but not necessarily looking to stay in banking.

The issue is that laterals in past years usually stay 1-3 years as they are hired under the impression of wanting to stay in banking long term. Certainly not the case for me. Given buyside recruiting will probably kick off late summer for roles in dec-July of next year, when is the earliest time that is okay to leave? I honestly can’t imagine staying 2 years, barely can imagine staying 1… just don’t know if it will look horrible if I leave in under a year. I know other laterals are probably in this boat. Thoughts?

This expectation probably should’ve been discussed during the lateral process, but maybe ask the people in the class above you. I think my group brought in laterals under the expectation they stay 2 years. Not that you have to stay, but it just might be tougher to get the references and support from you group if you’re leaving a full year early. My group was generally highly supportive of recruiting (MDs would call their contacts at PE shops, teams were supportive of interviews, etc), but I don’t think this would’ve been the case if leaving a year early.

I am in a very small team (think 7 people from Analyst to MD) so there isn't anyone I can ask about the the recruiting-stance of the team asides from the other analyst who also freshly started. I don't plan on bringing this up at least for another few years, but how would you usually have this conversation with the people who could vouch for you?

Also are you at a BB in a group that regularly sends analysts/associates to PE?
