REPE to REIT FP&A, wrong way?
Currently a second-year analyst in REPE in a no-name market, applied to a role that I thought was an acquisitions analyst in a top US metro at a REIT in the same industry niche I'm currently in, turns out it's more of an FP&A role. Should I consider the market upgrade (a city I would much rather live in) for a role that's technically less prestigious? Have never really enjoyed reporting per se, but am open to roles that will get me to a city I enjoy. Will this set me back in my career?

It depends on how much you value being in your desired market. Is it more important to just move there or to move there with the right job? If the former, then I say take this job and recruit for something else after you move. Otherwise, see if something better will come along.
I’m sure you know by now that recruiting from outside your desired market is tough. So if this role can move you there, it might not be so bad. Also, in the grand scheme of your career, a 1-year blip in FP&A at a REIT isn’t likely going to set you back that much.
I really do value moving there. I don't hate where I'm at now, but it's very important to be in a city with a population > 100k. My biggest concern was that I wouldn't be able to transition back to REPE or something similar once I take an FP&A role. Thanks for the insight!
You have prior REPE acq experience, though, and that's going to count for a lot regardless of market. I think you've been drinking too much WSO juice if you think 1 year in FP&A will fuck up your career path that much, lol.
Also considering going from REPE acquisitions at a no-name shop to FP&A at a REIT. Have the same concerns about recruiting afterwards, but my thinking is moving to more well known firm in a better market will help. I’ve seen some people move to REPE AM/acquisitions after REIT FP&A.
If you don't want to be in FP&A, don't take a job just to get to a city. There are enough jobs with what we do that I'm sure you can find a job you'll like. It'll be hard to move out of FP&A and tell the story that you took a job just to move cities.
