Royally Screwed...any advice?

Shortly after graduation I interviewed for a position at a real estate debt fund. After my initial screen I was told that I was slightly under qualified for the full time role and that an internship to hire structure would be a good solution. I was promised a 6 month cutoff from the start date to my internship morphing into a full time job, assuming adequate performance of course.

During those months I performed, became fully integrated, and was highly regarded by my team. 4-5 months in I began to inquire when the internship would end. I was told - we’re unorganized, don’t worry, it’ll happen in time. As it inched closer, I was again hinted of the good news. Finally on the official end date - I was told the news: management won’t let us make us position for you, against our recommendation. Apparently, changes in company recruiting had taken shape after I had been with the company for a number of months...and I wasn’t going to be grandfathered in.

I took embarrassingly low compensation due to the promise of a job. I moved to a new city and perfectly budgeted my savings. Now - I have a very unbelievable story, I’m broke, and I’m stuck with an apartment I can’t afford. There are even more details to this saga, but this is the gist.

So, shit happens - I’ll learn from it. I’m motivated to break into REPE or lending, and I have the resume to back it up. Hopefully I can come back with an inspiring story in a few months. Until then, any advice on breaking in?
