Seeking Input on Two Offers
Hello everyone,
I am currently considering two offers - both are in the life sciences space, one is IB and another is private debt. I know at the end of the day, the only person who can make the choice is me, but I would appreciate some input from you all. Here are the factors I'm considering:
- Cultural Fit - I really like both groups, so this is almost a wash. I think they're both appealing in different ways (ibank appeals to my intensity, lender to my careful thoughtfulness). I would give the lender a slight edge in this category.
- Lifestyle/WLB - lender has the clear edge here over ibanking.
- Ability to Grow - both firms encourage promotion from within and focus on low turnover. The private debt firm gives you a portfolio of loans to manage from the get-go and promotes very readily. The i-bank obviously turns you into a finance superstar by the end of your stint. Here is where I could really use some input from those who found their analyst years fruitful in terms of development.
- Nature of the Work - I like the fact that I get to work in my desired sector of biotech either way. In one, I make venture-like debt investments. In the other, I'm just a monkey, but a monkey in a lab coat. I feel the buyside role would be more thoughtful and intimate in terms of my due diligence. Again, open to input.
- Comp/Prestige - Here, IB has the edge, although the paycut I would take would be only about 20k and if I got promoted earlier in the private credit role, I could surpass what would be possible if I were to stay in banking. Prestige would probably be higher with the bank; although neither of the places I'm speaking about are international names by any means, they're pretty well-known in their space.
In conclusion, I feel both opportunities measure up almost equally with each other while appealing to me in different ways, making it even harder to compare/contrast and make a decision. Any input would be sincerely appreciated.
