Seeking Second MBA While Holding an MBA from a For-Profit University
I am considering obtaining a second MBA from a well known University (Such as Kenan-Flagler, Rutgers, NYU, etc.) since my first MBA is from a For-Profit University. I received my for-profit MBA while serving active duty in the military, due to its flexibility and affordability. However, now that I am no longer on active duty, I am having great difficulty obtaining employment in the civilian sector, even entry-level. Companies do not give me an opportunity for an interview, even through I meet their qualifications. I feel that the for-profit degree is damaging my opportunity to gain an interview, since a majority of companies rather select candidates from a well known schools. I understand that is is extremely difficult gaining acceptance to top universities while holding an MBA. Yet, I feel that another MBA from a top school will better my chances in the corporate world. I also know not to list my for-profit degree on my resume as I apply for positions. I am an Officer in the Military and would like to obtain employment as a general manager for a large corporation. Also, the Military is going to pay for my second degree, so financing for my education is not an issue. So my question is, should I even consider a second MBA, or select a MS Concentration in Marketing, IT, or Finance as it may better my profile overall?
Don't do this - I can only see it creating a bigger ding against you. Maybe someone has different perspective but it'd raise a big question to me as to what else you could do with that time and effort to improve your resume.
As a former military officer, I get why you took advantage of the education, it is a great benefit with the flexibility, etc, but as you're learning, for MBA the brand matters. I've seen too many guys who want to go the finance route get bad advice in the military, which is a damn shame to do to smart, hard-working people. But I digress. There might be a benefit in a non-MBA education (especially if Uncle Sam is paying).
What exactly do you want to do in a large corporation, and what is your background? I'd have no idea how to tell you to apply for the WSO-type jobs like banking/consulting/etc., but for a F500, your background can definitely get you in the door. If you're willing to cast a wide net, this is a pretty good time to be a veteran. But as always, 'it depends.'

I am currently a Signal Officer in the Army Reserves and have an undergraduate degree in Graphic Design and my MBA is in Marketing. I work as a freelancer in Graphic Design and Marketing and held several positions as an IT manager and administrator in the Army when I was enlisted for the past 7 years. I would like to work in a F500 company as a brand manager, marketing manager, Account Manager, project and/or product manager, etc.
Far too many Army officers fall trap to the same decision that you made. My unqualified opinion is you should move past the MBA to a MFin or other degree that could compliment your aspirations. Many top MBA programs explicitly state that you cannot attend if you already have an MBA, period. Good luck.
I cannot stand for-profit schools, they take advantage of veterans and the post 9/11 GI Bill and leave their students with nothing but a line on their resume.
