Senior Sales MD Networking Meeting Fail

Well, I wanted to share this story for some time. Thought would finally do it today.

I met a MD from BoA ML, Emerging Markets Rates Sales who came down to my university for an information session. I talked to him about markets (Aug - Sept, when markets were real shit) and managed to impress him. I got his card after the session and later contacted him via email, requesting him an informal meeting over coffee to 'know more about his achievements and the current economic order'. Turns out, he said yes and asked me to drop by a high-end coffee shop on an afternoon.

All pumped up, I reach the coffee shop and call him up. He comes down, and then before I said hello, he says - 'I cant give you much time. Indonesia just cut rates this morning and I need to be in my office'. It was a major turn-off and even though I tried to engage him, he seemed much more concerned with his work. I ended off by asking him to help me secure an interview, to which he had a lukewarm reaction.

Bad experience. Sometimes things just dont go your way.

Sounds like you fucked up.

You should have asked him to tell you about the rates cut, not mentioned the interview and said after 10-15mins that you're thankful for the time and that you don't want to take anymore of it up as he is obviously busy..

Eh, I don't think you f'ed up. If this is an MD in Sales, guess what? they like that hard sell. So as long as you had a decent short convo and he was somewhat interested, I am sure he didn't mind you asking for something -- that's what he does for a living!! I would apply and mention your encounter in the cover letter. Hopefully HR will have your name on their list already.

Best of luck.
