Should Facebook hook up with Match.com?
A lot of young people are avoiding Facebook, and opting instead to spend time on Instagram (which, yes, is owned by Facebook) , Snapchat and Twitter. This aversion to Facebook could spell trouble for Facebook's future growth since, if the kids aren't growing up with Facebook, they're less likely to grow old with Facebook.
To sustain growth, it seems like a good match for Facebook would be... well, Match, which owns a slew of dating sites, including Match.com, OkCupid and Tinder. Since dating and hooking up do not seem to be "fads," hooking your claws into this audience/demographic seems like a good way to secure growth and eyeballs for years to come (revenue and subscriber growth for Match were up, respectively, 36 and 27 percent YOY). https://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-match-group-on….
Match stock is dropping today on news that the founders of Tinder are suing the company for potential fraud related to their buyout, but whether FB goes after the entire company or just a couple of the dating sites, it seems that hooking up with one or more dating sites would diversify FB's business and create synergies between its already huge social network and the growing popularity of dating sites.
Thoughts?
Seems like lot of opportunity for cross-promotion — dating app could get younger people to use Facebook more, while Facebook could get older people to use dating apps more.
contradicting the cross promotion thesis, I don't think that a dating app would lead people to spend more time on fb - fb might get more users if they require people to make a fb account to use the dating app, but the purpose of a dating app and fb are different, so probably won't result in the dating app's users spending more time on fb I think. However, fb's main audience now is middle aged people. I don't think that there would be tons of people in their 30s or 40s who would be actively looking to use dating apps. I may be wrong though**
