Sophmore weighing future option
I am a Sophmore at Umass Amherst majoring in Finance with a 3.5gpa.
I'm just trying to get an idea of possible careers I might end up in. I talked to a few alumni who are working at big 4 accounting firms, so I know something like that is in reach. I realize I'm not a candidate for any of the extremely prestigious jobs, so I'm just aiming to position myself so that I am able to get an MBA from a good school and hopefully move onto the blue-blood turf from there.
Do I have any viable options to reach millionaire status by 30?
I'm sorry did you post something to read because I can't stop staring at that girl's ass?
state school muff brah... knew i shouldn't have attached that pic
Don't sell yourself short. You have a 3.5 and you obviously care enough to come on this site. Also, a 3.5 after onlt 2 semesters is easy to move up. Do a search on this site about how to network, write a resume, what activities to to pursue, ect. Year only a sophomore which means you have 4 months on prep and interviewing to land a BO/MO finance internship or even a spot at the Big 4. With some work experience this Summer, you can position yourself nicely for SA recruiting and FT after that.
My buddy graduated from Umass Amherst in 09' with a degree in Finance, worked as an analyst at Silverwood Partners a boutique in MA, then applied as an experienced hire to Thomas Weisel Partners and got in, so IB is a possibility if you take the right steps.
Great, I'm definitely going to try to intern back office somewhere. What types of firms exactly should I look at applying to?
Happy to see some optimistic posts. You guys are my motivation.
If you're shooting back office, I would say hit all the usual suspects MM wise and throw in your resume at all of the BBs. It can't hurt. Being that you're a younger guy though, you may want to hit up some regional boutiques and stuff like that as they will probably yield a higher success rate.
There is no reason to say you can't get your a "prestigious" job out of college. It simply comes down to how hungry you are and how badly you want it. As long as you are not a complete jackass and have some idea of your goals and aspirations, the rest is just a numbers game.
Try getting a FO at boutiques (read: regional, local boutiques). Spend lots of time networking and getting your shit down, so when the golden 30-second arrives, you will nail it in your sleep. BO / PWM / AM is filler (though a MM / BB name may help since you are only a sophomore).
