Sophomore Resume - Sophmore with the end goal of BB

Hey guys,

Currently a sophomore with the end goal of bulge bracket M&A (unique, right?). Going to start emailing around to local boutiques to try and get a spring/early summer internship set up. Can't do a full summer internship because I'm studying abroad and leaving in early August. Any comments/suggestions are much appreciated!

Your bullets are weak grammatically and need more quantitative data in them.

It's OK to have white space as a sophomore - you don't need to put down every activity you've ever done.

Combine the marathon bullet into your hobbies.

If you're going to use months like you do for your work experience, be consistent. Use them for your activities as well. Going off that, your abbreviations are inconsistent - you use Sept while using 3-letter abbreviations everywhere else.

Change "Experience" to "Work Experience"

Your graduation date should read "Expected Jun 2014"

Use the American spelling for traveling.

Take out the bit about your HS jobs or put them under work experience.

Split out your SAT scores by section as well - CR/M/W.

Do all this and then come back and I'll try to be more helpful.

Lastly, don't worry about a full summer internship - boutiques will often have an informal internship program so you should be able to work with them. Also, don't ask for an internship the first time you email them.

"large public regional target in Los angeles, CA" Lol why bother trying to hide UCLA's name? Come on man.

On a slightly more serious note, water, restaurants and chemicals are not sectors.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

yeah idk on the UCLA thing, writing blatantly obvious things like that seemed to be commonplace so i followed the trend. better words for the sectors then? i was fully under the impression those were the names. it's definitely how they're referred to around the office.

SEC - working on some corrections now... good catch on traveling, i didn't even know that.

gonna have to disagree with you on "sep" though, september's typically the only month with a 4 letter abbreviation.

i'm also not a huge fan of the "expected" graduation date. fairly obvious that june 2014 is expected.

is it really worth it to talk about being a bagger or working at a shooting range? i've attended pre-investment banking workshops in the past that said if you can't put a financial spin on the job don't make a big deal about it.

oh and i definitely left activities off the list, i just tried to stick to the ones that were the most finance oriented. i can/will change the bullets and narrow down if necessary.

If that's how they're referred to then fine, I was under the impression that restaurants would be under consumer sector and water under natural resources.

No biggie.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

yeah it's cool. consumer can be broken down into a lot of different sectors in ER. cause each analyst covers 1 sector, typically 10-20 companies. so there's restaurants, consumer retail, entertainment/toys, etc. water is actually "water & renewable energy solutions," which is a bit wordy. guess i'll include the full name though.

I worked in landscaping after my sophomore year of high school and it's still on my resume. Came up in some SA interviews and 0% of it was related to finance. YMMV. Obviously do whatever you want with my recs, I personally don't even like the three letter abbreviations and use full month names on my resume.
