Sophomore year summer: Private equity or Investment banking?
Obviously you can only take what's on the table, but if given both opportunities, which would you take to best set yourself up for a BB SA offer for junior year and why?
1. Mid-market boutique PE firm
or
2. Boutique investment bank
My rationale is that not taking firm reputation into account, the boutique investment bank would serve better on a resume/interview because the skills likely used during the internship(though menial and often administrative in nature) is more translatable, but I could be wrong.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Do what Zyzz would do.
Whichever is more aesthetic brah.
I, personally, would probably go with whichever has the better reputation but either way it sounds like you're in a very good spot.
What is zyzz?
He is the son of Zeus brah
In all seriousness, I would say its very subjective. If you don't go to a target, I would say take the botique IB soph internship in order to help you lock in an SA spot your junior year. If you do go to a target, Id say take the PE....however thats just me.
Sophomore with two internship offer (IB and PE) - which one do I choose? (Originally Posted: 02/12/2014)
Hi all,
I am a sophomore at a semi-target school (Northwestern) with no prior finance experience. I have been networking and interviewing over the past two months, and I currently have two offers for internships that will start in the spring (part time) and last until the end of the summer (full time). The first is at a small boutique investment bank that does primarily sector-specific M&A advising. The second is at a small private equity firm. Both are in Chicago, pay roughly the same amount, and should offer excellent experience in basic financial analysis, preparing memoranda and presentations, excel, etc. The only difference is the team - I think I would enjoy working with the PE team more.
My question is: if I want to pursue an internship in IBD at a bulge bracket next summer, would it be better to choose the bank for industry experience, or will the PE experience be equally valuable? My GPA is high and I am a competent interviewer, so which of these two internships would better position me for next year? I have to decide by this Friday and would appreciate any input.
Thanks so much!
I would say the PE group, but solely because I think it would be a better networking opportunity to pally up to them to introduce you to their BB buddies, and worse case scenario you get a return summer offer to do another PE internship there and return full-time and go to PE straight out of undergrad
PE > IBD ... right? my 2 cents
