Starting Consulting as a New Parent
Hi Everyone,
This site has been super helpful as I navigated my path from my PhD in biomedical science through the case prep and interview process. Thanks in part to everyone here, I'll be starting as an LSS at LEK in October! I'm now a new father, and my son will be ~6 months old by the time I begin working. Recognizing that both parenting and consulting are demanding jobs, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice about what worked or didn't work as a new parent while in consulting, whether you were starting fresh when you had a child, or later on in your career.
Thanks in advance for the discussion!
Congrats on the new job and on becoming a father! While I don't have a child myself, I do have a similar background to yours (PhD in biomedical sciences + consulting) and I know a couple people who have gone through intense jobs like consulting and investment banking while also being a parent. Here is what I have seen and heard:
1) You will need to extremely efficient in your work so that you can go home at a decent time (around 7-8 pm). Organization and sticking to timelines is crucial. 2) LEK tends to do a lot of due diligence projects, which means low travel - which is good for you (in a way - sometimes it just means more work hours at the office instead of on a plane). 3) There maybe some very intense projects where all-hands on deck are needed... for this, you may need to sacrifice your home life a bit (if you are able to and have someone to take care of the baby), otherwise just let your manager know and you may be able to work something out like working from home
Not going to lie, its going to be tough but the people that I have seen in your type of situation tend to become fantastic managers down the road since they are incredibly efficient and effective with their time. Good luck!
