Stingy things you do to save money
What are some power moves a brother can use to save a few dollars here and there? Things like stealing your toilet paper from the public rest room in the lobby or showering at the gym to lower your energy bill.

Drink alone and nothing top shelf.
Sad ... but frugal! Banana for you!
Eat less/ cook at home. Use as little electricity as possible, can do this by always turning lights off in rooms that you are not using or turning down the temp of your fridge/freezer. Make coffee at home/the office or go somewhere where it costs $1. Drink less booze, even if its one less drink every time you go out. More like jewish moves than power moves though.
Skip the toilet paper altogether and just take a shower right after (assuming water is included in rent). Just spread those cheeks, man. When guests come over, tell them you're just fresh out and need to go to the store.
I would advise on maintaining at least two rolls on standby. As the OP pointed out they can be acquired through other means.
It was mostly a joke, but if OP was truly scraping by, definitely consider that. But in all seriousness, unless you were entitled in college, you should know the best methods of getting by on the cheap.
Offer to buy people's food with the per diem money and for them to pay you cash back less a 10% discount
In college I would offer to be the guy that organized rent and utilities and would collect all the money a month early so I could earn interest on it. Mind you this was like 4 years ago and interest rates at my CU were maybe .25% and I'd make less than a dollar a month. I also used to frequently offer to pay for everything on my card, then have everyone venmo me, I would take the points and turn them into cash back.
You don't need to submit receipts for a per diem. You could just take the money and cook at home.
Are you a student... working.... I'd would hope that working in ECM as your profile may claim that you wouldn't have to steal toilet paper.... That being said there are other ways to save money... but really come on. You could be back office for life and I am pretty sure they don't even steal toilet paper and they wipe their asses just fine
playing video games saves you money for sure
Military shower: cold water, turn it off while soaping and scrubbing. Only on while rinsing, not a second longer.
Make the chick pay for the date, then leave.
Man, you never skimp on toilet paper. There are so many ways to save money. Buying cheap toilet paper should never be one of them.
Intermittent Fasting / Warrior Diet, with cheap ass food during your 4-6 hour eating window
Intermittent fasting is good. But, at least buy some lettuce and canned tuna or something over ramen.
Buy everything in bulk.
pants with no pockets
This is genius. No pockets = no place to put money = no way to spend money...
Holy $hit y'all are some stingy mother fuckers! I was thinking along the lines of cooking at home, drinking coffee at work instead of Starbucks, etc
but fucking toilet paper being too expensive?
I'm not even in IB and most of you guys make bonuses larger than my salary and I don't do any of these things...holy Christ.
What are you going to do if a female companion/escort comes over?
Costco Making a personal budget to realize where and what your expenses are
re-use tooth paste
yall are fucking idiots, you can't cut your way to greatness. you control your fixed costs and go from there.
you can be stingy as all fuck on things like power and water, but reality is, unless you stop showering or forgo technology/HVAC, it won't move the needle. put big stuff first, that extra $15 you save on power & TP every month doesn't add up to shit except for less friends and a bloody asshole.
jesus guys, get it together
+1
If people put as much effort into their career as they did into cutting minuscule costs, they'd be able to buy a couple thousand fucking TP rolls.
Take the train to the station nearest to the spot you are Ubering to.
Stop dating.
Surprising no one has mentioned that yet...
or break up before valentine's day, get back (if needed) afterwards...
Rookie. I recommend before Christmas.
Or find a girl who makes 2x what you do. That's what Goldie did. Do what Goldie does, as a rule of thumb throughout life. When faces with a dilemma, just stop and ask yourself, "What would Goldie do?" Make a WWGD keychain. Get a tattoo on that weird flap of skin between the thumb and and index if you must.
Doesn't really matter how much she makes; you'll still have to pay for at least half of everything. But a good strategy is to then divorce her.
I live less than a 5 minute walk to work so during my lunch break I go home and make a sandwich.
I can make a club sandwich everyday for 25 bucks a week, all that extra money I spend on beer.
.... Kinda defeats the purpose OP is going for, but hey good idea nonetheless
I honestly just gorge down on the office fruits and haven't spent a dime on breakfast nor lunch on weekdays. (I'll literally have like 6-8 bananas and a couple apples). The only times I actually spend money is on my corporate card for client meetings.
Sounds pretty fruity to me.
I like how he devours the cheapest fruit(s) possible.
Do any of you know how easy it is to steal from your college food courts?
Andy Fastow is that you?
All the worst people I've met are cheap. Don't do it.
I only "cheap out" if it (directly or indirectly) benefits my health. So examples would be: - rarely using Uber - no fattening desserts - never ordering take out (how it is not blamed for obesity?) - rarely shopping online - not paying for instant reproductive gratification etc.
savings go straight towards $200 dollar running shoes and $4,500 dollar racing bicycles, among other fitness splurges.
1) Uber is awesome 2) Take out is fine - choose wisely 3) I get tons of deals on Amazon
I used to work in the FX dealing desk before. Our office was in a hotel building. In the afternoon to evening there's this small food kiosk that sells untouched hotel food at a fraction of the price, I'd buy lots of those, put it in the fridge and just stick it in the microwave. It was around 60-70% cheaper than buying the food from the restaurants around.
Where is that building?
In UK, to prevent getting sued for being sick after consuming those kind of food, the hotel usually throws them away. Of course hotel staff taking it for themselves is a different story altogether.
I'm in Southeast Asia. Actually I'm not really sure if it's buffet food, I just assumed because it was affordable compared to the hotel food.
Actually, in the morning until afternoon it's still not cheap but gets a 50% discount by evening so I get that for dinner too. The serving sizes are just big so I normally end up eating half of it and the other half for the next meal which is why I saved a lot of money.
My Stingy IB Friend (Originally Posted: 03/31/2010)
I have a friend who just accepted a BB Summer Analyst IB position... He is very intelligent and very deserving of the position. However, he is cheaper than the dollar menu at McDonalds. Most recently, he has a date this friday and I caught him printing out the bus route he and his date will take to the bar that they will be going to. Does this sound like a future i-banker? Do you think she will believe that he ACTUALLY has a IB job? Does he need to loosen up his wallet and stop being a tightwad? I mean the kid has jeans that he refuses to replace with holes in them due to his laptop case rubbing against the side of his pants when walking to class. Comments? Advice? yes, I will show him all posts to this thread...
Stop trolling
Sounds like he's maximizing ROI - especially if he gets laid.
Stop trolling
They're going to a bar for a date?
And, are you just jealous of his game?
Just cause he got a BB summer analyst offer, doesn't make him a banker yet. And even first and second year analysts are not ballers- many have student loans to pay off. Judging by the sound of it, this kid doesn't come from a wealthy family and probably worked hard to get his BB SA offer. I think you're the douchebag for caring how much money he's spending. Mind your business.
just tell him that you need a dollar....ha-ha....and if he won't even give that to you, then he ain't worthy of nothin'.. but seriously though, in his defense, if this is in nyc, taking the subway/ bus wouldn't be too frowned upon, prsonally i'd roll my eyes at a 20 year old boy who took me out with a limo or some shit like that
you're not a real banker so to speak until you're a VP right?
being frugal is the path to getting retired by age 35
i'm inspired. i'm telling all the ladies from now on..no more ends
Dude, who cares. (1) He's not taking you out, and (2) Does he come into your bedroom and tell you how to blow your boyfriend? No. Go away.
Your stingy friend might have a boatload of student loans, or be involved in expensive litigation. I applaud his creativity.
As a girl, I would have liked it if he cooked my dinner. Maybe he is just planning for retirement or weeding out golddiggers.
Cool idea. I'd totally cheap out on the first date and if they don't call me back I'd know they're trolling for $$$$.
Besides, being underestimated by your competitors (but recognized by your bosses) is one of the best weapons you can have in your arsenal.
WTF, he printed out the bus route? Doesn't he know how much paper costs? Clearly, the man should've memorized that shit.
I showed him your reply and here was his response...
"Child Please, I 'borrow' that paper from the library"
Lol, gold.
Please still do show him the replies to this thread. It's only fair.
This issue is very close to my heard, being a frugal guy myself. Id love to have a friend like that. All my friends think that I'm a cheap bastard because I like to walk everywhere in the city and not take a bus, train, or cab. Honestly i dont give a DAMN what anyone thinks of my spending habits.
I have a friend that purposely wears shitty clothing to see how people he doesn't know treat him , their tone quickly changes when they see him get into his Ferrari Enzo.
Props to your friend, I know a few people like that except they pretend to be clueless in order to ascertain people's true character. And walking in the city is fun / good fitness even, that's not even a matter of frugality IMHO (of course, for distances over 40 blocks or so I'd take a train/bus/cab).
Now to the OP's post, it's really none of your damn business as above posters have said. That said, I'll give you a little defense - I can't say I've ever heard of anyone taking a date...on a bus....to a bar. Either a cab is involved, or they're going to a restaurant - can be a dumpy place, I'm sure even you big-spenda have done that. In either event, it's really not yours or ours to judge him.
I know someone just like that. He dresses like an ordinary guy, refuses to buy anything other than Walmart sneakers. He uses those sneakers to mash the peddle on his 2010 Lamborghini LP670 SV.
I'm a tightwad too. The other associates at my firm blew all their savings during their analyst years and I have a nice nest egg already. I just don't spend on stupid shit.
