Switching asset classes
I've searched this a little, but didn't get the answers I was looking for.
I'd like to work on a new desk and wanted some advice on how to get there. I currently work in equities (a niche kind luckily, we haven't been getting killed relative to broader equities mkt). I've become more and more interested in fixed income. I'm a believer in trying to do what interests you the most, even if it takes longer to get there and you make concessions on the way. This is a longer term goal.
Some background: I went to a semi target, don't have a noteworthy GPA. I began my career in ER, but am now on the S&T desk. I mostly do sales, but am taking my series 57 soon so I can execute trades. I'd like to one day transition to a FI desk. Beyond the potentially stronger job security, FI has gained my interest in a pretty big way. Right now I am reading as much as I can on the topic. I read fundamental type FI books to have a more solid knowledge foundation, offering documents, and try to stay abreast of new issues. I am doing this for myself, I know that isn't going to show up on my resume.
My question is: what steps can I take to transition to an FI desk in the future? I am not expecting this to happen tomorrow and have no illusions of grandeur as far as where I will be working and the initial role in which I am placed. My initial thoughts are the obvious (networking). I am also thinking of taking a few classes at TTS type places.
