Venture capital. I'm in round 4+ with firm X and I'm applying to firm Y. I'd rather work at firm Y. How do I tell firm Y when applying that I'm deep in rounds with firm X, a direct competitor?

It's perfectly fine to inform Firm Y that you're deep in the process with Firm X. I personally wouldn't detail the situation in an email to Firm Y, but rather wait to discuss in person in the back end of an interview. If you're a good fit for the position at Y, both you and the interviewer will realize early on and they'll likely understand and accommodate your time constraints. Good luck with both firms, hope everything works out!
