One of the biggest benefits of working at a job is some of the people you will meet along the way........ but it can also be one of the worst.

I just died after seeing this picture. Best the office episode hands down.

Anyhow my experience would be when me and one other guy that I had become friends with were both inline for a promotion. Lets call him Steve. I just moved over from another team and was told if I went I'd be promoted and I was doing really well. Steve wasn't as good with what he brought to the table but him and the manager at the time went way back. In other words we had both been promised a promotion.

As soon as I got there within 3 weeks the manager at the time got moved somewhere else (if by now you can imaging how disorganized this place is then u r right). Me and Steve talked about promotions and he said he wasn't interested because he already had no work life balance. That met I was surely going to get the promotion! A new manager came in and neither me or Steve were that fond of the guy. Lets call him Jim.

Jim told me multiple times that I was the best and would be promoted by the end of the month. Welp. the end of the month came and guess what? So did our meeting. Here Jim took the opportunity to tell me Steve went behind my back and told Jim I didn't like him and that I wasn't fit for the position and that HE WAS.

I was shocked. He acted like a little girl. Lets say we got into a heated argument professional style and I ended up getting the promotion. I said "If this guy had to go behind my back and start drama to get the position do you really think he's management material".

Luckily he was so embarrassed he put his 2 weeks in and I never saw that fool again

 

This one guy who sucked at his job and was on the verge of burning out always rubbed me the wrong way, unfortunately he was above me. Eventually got promoted unexpectedly and of course I had to work with him directly. He didn't seem happy that I got the promotion and always treated me like I was his assistant. Asking me to do things on his calendar etc bc he was lazy.

One day I saw that he had a mixed a few meetings up because daylight savings and I said screw it. I was tired of cleaning up after him and making him look good when he did literally nothing. He ended up getting in hot water with the boss but he couldn't blame the calendar on me bc I wasn't supposed to be doing it anyway.

It all worked out bc he never asked me to do his calendar again and a few months later he got moved to another department and then they let a bunch of people go and he was one of them.

 

I shouldn't have done it the first time but I didn't want him to go to our manager and say you promoted this guy before he was ready but unfortunately since I didn't speak up straight away he took advantage. Catch 22

 

I had a manager once that was a complete moron and was later fired for stealing money from the company, and me and him had a "spat" a few times.

I kept missing money from my checks and when i would ask him why he would say "I don't know" so I went above him and called. I guess he didn't like that and said " I have higherups calling me and I look dumb bc I didn't know. You have to follow the chain of command"

At this point I was like............ If I do, you do nothing about it, so what is the point??

He then told me thousands were missing from HIS CHECKS!! I said well don't you want to know what is happening with your money too?? He said he was afraid to ask......

Needless to say him stealing was definitely part of why me and my coworkers were missing. Never again

I was an analyst back in the day at a small pe shop and the VP was a "I need to control everyone" type of manager who actually looked down on junior employees who did well. The type of person who likes to hire incompetent people so they basically do whatever she says and could never be a threat.

Obviously there are always two sides of a story, but I was a high performer and really took initiative. So, after about 7 months I had already began taking on big projects for people senior to her and put in the extra hours/worked weekends to make sure all of my work was top of the line.

Being so junior and new to the work force I did not know that something like this could rub people the wrong way, so I kept taking on more work and really trying to do well for the firm. Flash forward a few weeks and a random meeting shows up on my calendar with me, her, and the HR director with no context at all. The meeting is in about an hour and I have no idea what it is about so I did not prepare or even think that it would be negative. When I sat down in the meeting they both present to me a FOUR page document outlining how I was "underperforming" . The document contained both outright lies and gross exaggerations of the truth about my behavior and work quality. This girl was literally lying to HR in an attempt to get me written up. I was expected to sign this so it would be on my HR file forever.

So after reading it, I looked at them both and basically was like "what kind of shit is this?" "If you think I am signing this you are out of your mind" "Nothing on this is even real" "What kind of firm allows a manager to treat an analyst like this" "I want to speak to an MD about this" etc.

Let's just say that HR did not like that and I was fired for "Not taking feed back professionally"

In the end it was a good life lesson on how nasty some people can be in a workplace and why culture is very important when looking for jobs.
