To initiate contact or not, after 2nd interview? (Lunar New Year issue)

Hi all,

First post here, despite dwelling for a while and have learned so much from all generous monkeys here. Big thanks to all who've helped!

I don't think my situation is a common one, i'll try to describe as much in details for you guys to assess and give advices:

there are a few people involved in this situation, will use short form here: CC - my current colleague XC - ex-colleague of my current colleague, who's now working at the bank i've applied to HD - head of dept SRM - Senior RM HR - HR staff IBF - I-banker close friend of mine (5th yr AVP)

So i applied to "credit analyst" position at this bank. got to know about it from CC. CC was asked by XC for any potential candidate, and so CC asked me if i was interested (on 15Jan2016, Fri), i emailed XC over the weekend, got a phone-interview from XC on Monday (18Jan2016,Mon), discussed about my internship, current job scope, pay expectation. got another call from HR after the phone-interview. Was asked to prepare a case-study (19Jan2016,Tue) for 1st round interview the next day (20Jan2016,Wed). When I went through the job description, its application deadline was 31Dec2015.

CC said he's got a msg from XC that the HD will be hard on the interview, so be prepared.

Went down for 1st interview, grilled heavily by HD with my presented case study. Thought I failed miserably, since I'm only midway doing my own studying of modeling. Half hour of technical questions on my case-study, and half hour fit questions about myself, characters, hobbies, after-work hours blahs. was confident my fit qns were decently good. Handshakes, but no questions about pay/notice periods/start date.

After the 1st round, felt miserable. thought it's a goner. Sent a thank-you mail to HD, cc-ed XC two days later (22Jan2016,Fri), got a reply by evening from HD. Found out they posted same JD on 20Jan2016,Mon, the day I interviewed. thought my chance was completely hopeless. Deadline for new JD is 12Feb2016,Fri.

Suddenly got a call during lunchbreak on 1Feb2016,Mon for 2nd round interview the next day (2Feb2016,Tue).

Went down and met with the SRM. No technical qns, just hour-long of fit qn, and one random math qn. did not nail the math qn, but thought i did sufficient explanation on my thought-process to solving it. and carried on the rest with other fit qns. SRM told me more about the job scope, asked about my willingness to relocate, my 5-10 year ambition (said 5 years to be still within the credit analyst role, but 10 years on, hoping to be equity analyst (i'd like to be an ER)). asked about my preferred starting work hours. Told me to be prepared for a few more rounds of interviews, then handshake.

Sent another thank-you email on 5Feb2016,Fri to SRM, HD, XC. XC replied that they will be only making decision after Lunar New Year 2016 (on 8-9Feb2016,Mon&Tue).

So far, no response yet. Consulted IBF if i should send an email for status confirmation, he said no, will appear to be too desperate.

Bottomline: 22 days have passed since my last interview(2Feb2016,Tue), but deadline of the 2nd JD is 12Feb2016,Fri, which is AFTER CNY of (8&9Feb2016,Mon&Tue). So, taking into account for this festive holidays, it's been "only" 12 days since the JD deadline. Should I initiate contact to ask about the status? If so, whom should I contact? SRM, HD or HR?

What are the chances does it appear to you that I'll land the job?

Much thanks for all inputs!

Your post is pretty long, so you'd be more likely to get replies if you could condense it into just a few sentences. It's also kind of confusing with all the acronyms and details.

But it sounds like you're on a waitlist if you haven't heard back yet. The offer has likely been made to another candidate and they're waiting to hear back if he or she will accept the offer. If not, they'll move onto candidate #2, and so forth down the list of candidates until the position is filled. I would contact human resources to see if they have an update for you.

thanks a lot for the replies! I'll send out an email in the afternoon, hopefully the HR will have some update for me by tmr.

@sanzo, are you currently having such situation? if not, how did yours turn out, did you get your offer in the end? thanks!
