Toronto Securities Research
I recently graduated with an MA in economics from the University of Toronto and am actively looking for positions in financial research in the Toronto area. I posted a censored copy of my CV on razume, it is available at:
http://www.razume.com/documents/21214
I would be very interested in chatting with anyone in the Toronto area in regards to careers in the financial industry. Any U of T grads out there?
Your coursework aside, nothing else on that resume tells me you're interested in finance. Not sure how you can change that right now.
A few questions for you:
How did you go through 5-6 years of school (undergrad AND masters program) without participating in a single related club or activity?
Why didn't you try to get a relevant internship during your school years?
Where is your masters GPA?
Thanks for the feedback, in regards to your comments:
1) I played lacrosse for my university for 2 years as an undergrad (see the bottom of my CV).
2) I didn't consider pursuing finance until I came to U of T. After I took a few finance classes I realized I wanted to pursue the area further and I definitely plan on taking the CFA in December. I have worked/volunteered every summer in different areas.
3)My marks as a masters student were relatively mediocre (around a B+ average) and therefore I left off the GPA on my CV (not sure how much of a deal breaker this is).
All of our best players keep leaving to play internationally. Sucks.
You'll be asked about your Masters GPA in an interview although they'll probably figure you left it off becuase your marks weren't that hot.
What area of research are you interested in?
I am very interested in fixed income research as it tends to be more quantitative than other areas and more related to economics (which I like to think I have a good background in). Master's GPA is a bit of an issue and I am still unsure how to address it in my CV.
Like others have said, networking is key.
I work in banking in Toronto, but I know a bit about research...
The ER industry in Toronto is tiny. Hiring can be very inconsistent year to year, as shops will usually only hire on a need basis as opposed to an annual graduate program. Economics at UofT is decent, but at least at the larger Canadian dealers you'll be competing against candidates who have MBAs from top Canadian schools and more often than not, have completed 2+ levels of the CFA and have relevant finance experience.
Looking at your resume, it's super sparse. As someone already mentioned, I see nothing that demonstrates you want finance.. Working on the CFA is a step forward, but it's still going to be an uphill battle. I suggest targeting smaller shops where networking might help (Clarus, Jennings, Mackie etc).
Good luck.
