Trading to Private Equity?

Hey guys, so I’m entering my senior year of undergrad and have been thinking more and more about my post grad opportunities.

As of right now I will most like be in some prop trading/HF role after grad and have a few offers. I’m very thankful for these opportunities and definitely find trading/markets my #1 passion as of right now. But I’ve been thinking more about down the line work and I don’t imagine I’ll always want to only be in trading/HF. I imagine I’d like to join the strategy side of things later on and could see myself in a buyout fund.

Is it a more common path than I assume, to move from trading to private equity/VC (Ideally without an MBA)? I know of a few people who’ve done this but they’re big shots in both worlds.

Interested in hearing your guys’ comments. Cheers

It can be done in theory but it will probably be uphill to put it mildly, and very network driven. VC path I can think of might be joining fintech, doing strategy/sales/BD and then knowing everyone (sourcing) and then to VC but that's a stretch though it's done... PE is much more traditional but regional shops or smaller folks might be willing to give you a look if they know you. In either case, this board probably won't be of much help since it is much much more traditional in nature.

Congrats on graduating!

Good Luck

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.

Thanks man, for what it's worth I have background in traditional finance + strat through internships. Oddly enough, I'm also a misfit for my degree focus being straight business/finance not quant/CS/Math so I suppose that is a little better for the traditional route.

In your experience would you say that PE firms or Corp groups could consider HF analysts/traders people that also have strong knowledge in their respective industry (software/semis/pharma/etc)? Some bridge is better than none I suppose.

Also appreciate the kind words but I graduate this coming year, 2020. Apologies if that wasn't clear.
