U of Chicago Masters in FinMath

I come from a prominent school in the Middle East ( usually target for multinational consulting firms in the Arab Gulf), but I'm really interested in landing something on the buy-side in the U.S (AM, buy-side research, etc...).

I just got accepted into UChicago's MS in FinMath and honestly I am considering it because I think it'll make it easier for me to land something later on in Chicago, NYC, BOS. The program also sounds very interesting because I come from an engineering background and I interned last summer doing quant-ish work at an AM boutique in Boston (~ $5B AUM).

Plan B was to work in ER for a few years --> go for MBA --> network hard to get something decent on the buy-side

My main concerns: 1) restricting myself to quant-investing/trading if I do the masters, and 2) Not landing anything now if I forgo the masters due to the not-so-great labor market in light of COVID.

Do you think doing the masters now is a good investment to find something good later on, or should I keep on trying to land something relevant now? Which sounds more reasonable?

Sorry for the long post.

I got an offer from there this spring as well. I ultimately decided to go to MIT's program because of its flexibility.

Nevertheless, I think you should be able to do buy-side research from UChicago. It's obviously not guaranteed, but I think you would have a good shot.
