university of melbourne vs rotterdam school of management

so i've gotten an offer from both schools now, here's a brief description of both programmes by the universities.

University of Melbourne
3 year undergraduate programme in commerce, planning to major in accounting and finance.

Rotterdam School of Management
3 year undergraduate programme in international business administration.

I would like to get into Ibanking in the future, and possibly find employment in the country that i'm studying in upon graduation.

Which would you recommend?

Melbourne is a top school and would recruit well.

Assuming you will be an international student you have an ultra slim chance of interning or recruiting as 99% of firms won't touch you if you aren't a citizen or have PR.

There's a large recruitment event in Rotterdam each year, called the international banking cycle, it is a fairly easy way to get in contact with a lot of I-Banks. During this event they recruit for both London and Amsterdam offices. However, it's not very common for non-Dutch to start working in the Amsterdam offices.

Here's some info on the event: http://bankingcycle.com/public/cms/

In addition, Amsterdam offices offer year-round internships, so you're not stuck to the summer for your internship.

Rotterdam sucks as a city, and trying to get an internship in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch is going to be quite though. I'd go to Melbourne, the quality of life will be significantly higher in Australia, nicer weather, friendlier people, hotter girls, etc. On top of that, Europe is a mess right now, and banks are hiring less and less each year. In short, go to Melbourne!

I can't comment on all the other stuff but dutch girls are a blast.

Yes, but generally not in Rotterdam.

haha, so are dutch or australian girls hotter? well but as a business school, which one can open me up to more opportunities to employment in that particular country? i understand that graduating students get 1 year of working visa in the NL and 18 months in australia. however the tax in the NL is no joke, and according to caribe_mexicano, finding employment in australia seems like a daunting task. would anybody care to shed some light on this?

I'd say Dutch and Australian girls are equally hot, but because of the warmer weather you see a lot more of the Australian girls. It seems your goal is to work in IBD. If that is the case, you will not get a job in Holland without speaking Dutch fluently. You should research whether the Dutch working visa also counts in London.

my aim would probably be to seek employment in the country that i would be studying in, then maybe consider migrating there. the process will probably take a long time. however for this, which uni will give me a better chance? i get the general consensus that seeking employment in both countries are difficult for an intl student such as myself.

What about studing in Rotterdam but looking for a job in London? RSM and Erasmus University are both target schools in the Netherlands. Also, I guess you are Asian, but if you are from EU it is possible (but difficult) to find a job there even if you don't speak dutch (I have a friend who got an offer from Rabobank and he does not speak dutch (although he is fluent in 3 other european languages)).

I'm grateful that I have two middle fingers, I only wish I had more.

Does RSM have networks in london? Do you mean that RSM and Erasmus are both target schools in london? I would think that most of the jobs in london would be taken up by the graduates from the bschools in london, eg LSE, Warwick, Oxford etc. Does RSM even come close to such schools? And yes, i am asian, but i not from EU. However if i do go over to RSM, i'll be sure to pick up dutch, i hope it helps me in my employability.

yes RSM is a target school/semi-target, came across plenty of alumni in London, anywhere from IB to PE to Consulting. Its up to you obviously to make it but the school wont put you at any disadvantage. If you are not fluent in Dutch you have a better chance of getting a job in London than in Amsterdam from RSM thats for sure.

No, RSM is not on par with LSE or Oxford for IBD in London but the question here was not RSM or LSE :).

Fortunately, IBs do not recruit only from Oxbridge, Warwick, LSE, Imperial, UCL, etc. but they do also recruit people from other European top schools (SSE, HEC, HSG, Bocconi, etc.). When they come to the Netherlands, they look for people from RSM and, maybe, from Tillburg, UvA and Utrecht (I met 2 people in BarCap from that school, 1 in compliance and 1 in IBD). Obv. you will not have the network that you may build going at LSE but it is very likely that every dutch educated person working in London did is BSc or MSc at RSM. To have a feeling of this you can simply linkedin and google some random profiles.

Finally, RSM is a top school for consulting so you will still have a good backup plan.

(I am not pushing you to RSM since I don't have any relevant info on UoM and Australia, I was just trying to give you some info on RSM).

I'm grateful that I have two middle fingers, I only wish I had more.

thanks cruel3a for your input! it was really helpful. i have the impression that RSM isn't so much steered towards finance but more of management and consulting. do top firms in the UK recruit from RSM? even if you're not dutch?

i do not know much about consulting but i hear it is a pretty lucrative route as well.

on a separate note, do you have any idea if ECTS are very impt when applying for Master's programmes? Or do most business degrees fulfil the typical requirements?

cedricTCS:
lucrative route as well

...so that's what it's all about...

Can't answer to your questions about ECTS and recruitment for non dutch people.

Yes sure, but try to understand what the job is about and if you like it. Otherwise you will just pick your school for something you may not like or stand. Anyway, if money is your main concern and you are Asian, I would go to UoM and then look for a job in Singapore or HK...

I'm grateful that I have two middle fingers, I only wish I had more.

i'm not sure if you know this but UoM accepts students with a 3.3 gpa from where i'm from (singapore). And these students are those with polytechnic diplomas, that do not take the IB or A levels. Hence, although an unfair judgement, UoM graduates or generally students from singapore that head to Australia to obtain their degree are less regarded than local university graduates as most of them are unable to qualify for local universities. Of course, there are a group that simply choose to go to UoM even though they are still able to make it to local universities. It would be ideal for me to get a job upon graduation in Australia, however i've also heard that that is going to be very challenging.
