VC scene in Europe

The question is pretty simple. The VC field in EU is very fragmented and nowhere near the size and dynamism of the US one. Why you think is that? Is the usual time-lag of Europe in adopting new things or is something more organic that prevents VCs (and entrepreneurship) to grow?

Well the whole purpose of asking is not knowing. My rough guesses is that its time lag or something structural which I cannot pinpoint as I lack the inside experience. I was hoping for someone with more experience to illuminate this. Maybe its the language barrier between the countries, maybe is the low growth projections for the EU or the European beaurocratic system which is more complex than the US one.

IMO, language barrier, more laid back culture (translating to entrepreneurs not working 80-100 hr/wk to make things work) in many EU countries (think of Italy, Spain, and Greece), and scattered hubs (England, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, etc.) all make up the reasons.

Not everyone is meant to make a difference. But for me, the choice to lead an ordinary life is no longer an option.

What is obstructing the foundation of a big VC fund with local branches or an international team then? If anything else, it makes sense to diversify across different markets in EU. Maybe is that the entrepreneurial spirit is fairly new to Europe, people still rely on big companies to get a job. And its a shame because the social nets in many EU countries make the decision to start a business much less risky. On the other hand, finding funding is tough business in EU right now so its vicious cycle

I will take a look at ff Venture Capital. How would ou rank them ? What is their reputation ?

Since I am in Europe, I will not be able to meet for coffee. Do you think coldemailing can work ? Should i email associaties/Principal or Partners ?

Thanks for your help
