Volunteer suggestions for M7 programs
Hey guys,
I'd like to get investing or finance related volunteer ideas that involve either teaching or being involved with an endowment. Definitely open to other suggestions relevant to my background, and even remote volunteer opportunities.
My dream career is working at a value-oriented asset manager on the west coast (Brandes / Dodge & Cox / Hotchkis & Wiley). I'm aiming for the following programs: CBS Value Investing / Booth / Berkeley / Wharton.
Work Background:
Current sell-side equity research associate
1-year Big 4 valuation experience
Academic:
3.8 GPA / Top 50 Undergrad
760 GMAT
Just took CFA level I
Thanks
Interested as well.
there's an interesting one in Chicago called Monethink (https://moneythink.org/), maybe they can direct you to something local wherever you're currently living
Bigger cities tend to have non-profits with junior board memberships. May not be quite something at an endowment level, but there are definitely education related non-profits that are looking for people.
Great, thanks, will look into junior board positions
If you find something, can you please post back here.
create!!!!
who cares what others say to do.. make your own path - do some cold calling - call some firms and ask how you can help...
MBA Admissions - How important is community service? (Originally Posted: 03/20/2010)
How important is community service in admission to a top 5 mba program, assuming you are working at a BB? For those of you in IB, are you able to dedicate any time to volunteering since you are already working so many hours?
You still exist?
dont hate
Nice ot have but not that important
What about just extracurricular and community involvement activities in general?
You should expand your list to include Anderson - much better finance reputation than Haas despite not being "M7"
BUILD in new york city is pretty cool
Healthcare is a hot place to get moneyed volunteering experience.
Volunteered on the planning and execution of a variety of local fundraising events and campaigns for a regional hospital system. Specialty clinics like cancer, etc. are even more generous on that sort of activity. Given your pedigree, I think you'll have no problem convincing them of your "presentability" and professional reliability. Got the gig by calling the head of volunteering at a local Catholic hospital, and after a quick face-to-face he set me up with the right people. If you're a people person and want to quote some fundraiser money on your resume, give it a crack.
Meanwhile, if you're open to "remote volunteer opportunities"... look up "Cuddler Volunteering" or "Baby Cuddling Volunteering". One of the most personally and career-rewarding experiences of my life. You go in a few times per week and cuddle and softly nurture these incredibly sick newborns because it has been found that the power of soft voice and touch for babies greatly improves their conditions. The nurse does all the dirty work, you just hold and talk to the babies. As my boss pointed out, having that on my resume immediately set me apart for him, establishing that I'm a trustworthy, caring person. I mean, you're healing other people's babies!
If you're a guy, won't make you look less of a man for doing it. In fact, if you're single great way to meet nice, clean chicks or use as a pickup line :)
Good luck.
