Yeah I averaged 60 miles per week over the past 6 months so 70 per week over the next year seems doable

Unless you're shooting for some marathon, I would think about diversifying your workout. Your joints will not love you in the near future with that sort of wear and tear.

He probably runs track/XC. 60-70 miles per week is common for milers up to low volume 5k guys.

I did accomplish most of what I wanted to in 2018. It was a great year, although still left room for lots of growth. In 2019 I broke up my goals into different categories to help me stay balanced. Still working on how to make some of these measurable, so any input would be welcomed.

  • Spiritual: Pray and study the scriptures every day.
  • Physical: Go to the gym at least three times a week. Don't eat things that make me feel gross (high sugar, dairy, hi-carb food).
  • Social: Probably won't have any social life due to work, so instead I want to call my parents once a week and keep contact with friends from college (I'm really bad at staying in touch).
  • Professional: Rock the GMAT. Smile more at work/maintain a positive attitude.
  • Financial: Pay off the rest of my student loans!

Happy New Year!

  1. Finalise an internal move within my current company. If that fails, start applying externally.
  2. Run a half-marathon and be consistent with the gym.
  3. Improve my Spanish and Portuguese to a B1 level.
  4. Increase savings pool and consider looking for first apartment.
  5. Take up a new class
  6. Host a dinner party - just one that I've always wanted to do!

Best of luck everyone with their 2019 goals.

That would be a ferocious time. I used to be able to get a mile under 6:00 (and two under 12:00). One of my goals is to get back down to that.

hahaha it's not Olympian level fitness, but more of a rite of passage -

It's a pretty good accomplishment for a runner, but probably barely elite level running. Most talented HS runners break 5 and for college level, it's not that big of a deal.

This college XC runner in my city is trying to break it too this year and we are training in the same city. She currently has a 5:05 for the 1600m. She is a lot closer than I am. My PR is 5:18 and I hit 5:19 a few months ago without much run training.

If I can do some speed work this year on the track, I think I might have a chance. I tried to start prepping in June last year, but might integrate some speed work and intervals into my workouts more this year. I went too intense last year and just tried to run 12mph as long as possible each day and my left knee gave out (so I cycled to get the 5:19).

I have all the tech this time and feel like I will be well prepared. I used to be more of a non-tech pure runner and cyclist, but Strava and tracking my training with other athletes has given me more insight than before.

Last year, I was training for the mile in a friendly competition with a different chick and ended up beating her on 5th Ave, which was a sweet victory and this year just want to beat this college runner. That's the level of competition - it's not Olympic level, but just a respectable time.

I have a handful of races this year, including a full Ironman in CO in June, but really just want to see 4:XX in NYC on 5th ave just once at the finish line in my life. 4:59 wouldn't even win my age group in that race. It's very competitive. I'll probably never win my age group in the 5th ave mile. Unless I'm still running 4:XX at like 75 years old - haha, that'd be something.

Are you running in singles every day? I'd assume you're breaking up most of these days 5-5 or 4-6 the am/pm with a straight 10 miles on your long run day. Good luck with 100 mile weeks. I never cracked 60 in college but I knew some guys who were cranking 110+ during the summer and you could see it in their eyes.

Jan 6, 2019

Yeah doubles sometimes. Most I've ran in one week so far is 88. I want to try out the lsd approach because I read about these guys amby burfoot and Bob Deines who pretty much just ran slow but for like 2 hours per day. A lot of people back in the 70s it seems ran well like this. 100-140 'slow' miles. I put together a good stretch of 80+ mile weeks 5ish months ago when I was trying to do this approach but was running too hard and fucked my legs up. Didn't see a doctor so idk what it was but couldn't hop on one leg without bad pain and couldn't walk up or down stairs without shuffling sideways. I was feeling really fit aerobically doing this much running though. But since then I haven't been running quite as much. Only about 50-60ish, sometimes 70 normally. But I'm going to try the mega miles again and this time I'm going to run slower.

Totally agree - not quiet Olympian level fitness but a really solid rite of passage.. I'd say most athletes on my track team could run 5:30-6:30, more 400mm/800mm runners could pull at 4:45-5:30 and then our top 2-3 miler runners were all 4:05-4:30 (normally seniors about to go to college to run. Breaking 5 minutes is pretty nasty

Jan 1, 2019

During 2018 I graduated with my target GPA and broke into IB, for 2019, I have 4 main goals:

  • Lateral to a BB or EB (preferably EB)
  • Get fit and go to the gym at least 3 times every week. I stopped caring about my physical appearance when I started with my girlfriend but I miss being fit and I feel like I am less healthy
  • Help at least 1 person to break into Investment Banking. This is probably my most difficult goal since I am very junior at my current bank but it was really difficult for me to break into IB and networking ended up paying off for me. I feel like I need to give back and help someone to get at least an internship
  • Read MORE. In this industry you don't really have much time for reading but it is not an excuse. I must find a way to read at least 30mins every day

I also want to keep growing my network and give continuity to my current relationships and that is something we can all do better

Happy New Year!

They cut in line, talk behind our backs, recline into our seats, and even have the power to morph into trolls online. Their powers are impressive, but with a little foresight and thoughtfulness, we can take a stand against dickishness today. How Not to Be a Dick is packed with honest and straightforward advice, but it also includes playful illustrations showing two well-meaning (but not always well behaved) young people as they confront moments of potential dickishness in their everyday lives. Sometimes they falter, sometimes they triumph, but they always seek to find a better way. And with their help, you can too.Essential (and emotionally intelligent) etiquette tips are packaged here alongside hilarious "Dick and Jane"-style illustrations. Laugh and learn."

  • Continue to perform well in my current job and improve on certain areas I have already targeted for myself. Possibly lateral to another bank. Not certain on this one yet.
  • Fuckin KAAA-RUSH the GMAT cus I need to get serious about business school.
  • Get in much better shape. I want to get in good shape for lots of reasons, from being better looking to possible going into the service one day. Regardless, fitness can only help. Gonna start boxing and maybe pivot to muay thai later in the year. Thanks to all you guys who commented on my meal prep thread a while back--I already brought food into work today and am ready to hit the ground running!
  • Actually start learning about something that has always interested me. I have always been fascinated by animation and have had a lot of ideas that I dream of being able to draw up and share with other people. Idk how, but I wanna try to do something like this. And if I actually do and I make something I'm proud of, I'll be sure to share it with all of you :)

Out of curiosity, do you compete or just do it to learn the art/get the exercise?

I don't think I want to compete but I do want to test myself at some point. I have a friend who is interested in doing it with me and he said he'd be down to have some supervised fights between us if the gym is OK with it, just to test our mettle.

The latter since I'm pretty new to it but the pal I do mitt work with spars at an actual gym so once I get the foundation down I'll start sparring. It's def outside of my comfort zone (not even going to lie) but it needs to be done to put all the work in real time so it's exciting :)

Jan 2, 2019

That definitely makes sense and is probably what my friend and I will end up doing. I get double motivation from doing this with him cus we played HS football together and formed some sort of sibling-ish rivalry that has pretty much existed in every facet of our lives at this point. He was always the better lineman so I plan on kicking his ass a bit and get a little revenge lmao. But seriously, it looks like such a good thing to start doing. I'm really excited to make the jump.

I'd also like to maintain a longer term relationship with one girl (it would be an exclusive relationship where she is loyal to me but I still get to sleep with other women).

On top of that I plan on continuing to make fat stacks in IB and continue on the path to MD of an EB

Physical: Lose another 2 kilos/month until I reach 10% body-fat, then slowly bulk aiming for 1 kilo/month and increase implied 1RM on key lifts by 20% each. Will track all caloric / macro intake and continue with my PPL routine with 2x frequency/week.

Emotional: Start to read one non-fiction book/month. Easy 10 pages/day averages out to a book per month. (This goal is more so about improving my mindset and belief system, which directly influences the emotions I experience. Book topics range from autobiographies to books on discipline, personal growth and stoic philosophy).

Professional: Continue performing at school, aim to get a 4.0 in each class this year, which is feasible with enough grit and discipline due to my reduced study load. Ideally secure part-time analyst work with a local LMM advisory shop - have already make progress on this and am catching up with the founding MD come February.

Recreational: Make the time to get my motorbike license so I can get a bike to cruise around on the weekends. Make more of an effort to go our every month with friends to grab a bite / drink (I tend to become a pretty big recluse when super focused on tasks).

I review the differing areas of my life and set goals on a month to month basis, but it's always great to look at the symbolism of the new year as a fresh start with renewed vigour.
